Just bought a 19" flat panel

It didn't come with a DVI cable though and I'm not real pleased with the vga image. I've been told that the DVI cable won't make much difference. Anyone have a different opinion on this?

Which LCD did you buy? Does it have a DVI imput connector?

Are there rumors that a DVI output videocard with DVI to analog converter helps non DVI LCD"s?

If the monitor has DVI capability, and if your video card has it, connect the two.

what LCD and are you running it at the native res?

BenQ. I've tried it at 1024x768 and also at high resolutions. The higher I go the harder it is to read fine print...go figure. I think I'll try the dvi cable and play with the settings a bit.

DVI + native resolution is the only way to go with an LCD. You can easily tell the difference between DVI and VGA on an LCD.

DVI and VGA gave same pictire quality on mine...
If you are not happy with VGA and you have a decent VGA card, then I would RMA/return it.

Thanks. Actually, I'm getting used to it. I played Doom3 a few minutes ago and at 1024x768 it looks fantastic. Not nearly as dark as the 19" CRT it replaced. I didn't notice any ghosting either. I think I just had to get used to it.

On my old-ish 17.4" LCD, I hooked it up to my Radeon 7500 with both VGA and DVI simultaneously, and used its input-toggle feature to compare them to eachother with about a 1-second delay to switch back and forth.

:Q ~ no contest, baby... DVI pwns!

On my old Planar, at least, the choice is very clear 🙂

Wait a sec, you're NOT using the native resolution on an LCD? Then of course it's going you're not going to be pleased with the VGA image because each pixel has to be stretched in order to maximize the screen space making it ugly.

If you're not going to run 1280x1024 on your 19" then I highly recommend going back to CRT monitors.

And with my experiences with LCDs, DVI does make a big difference. But in your case, it's more of a resolution issue.

i highly doubt the native resolution on your 19inch lcd is 1024x768 its prolly closer to 1280x1024...
there are ways of increasing text size by means of the control panel if you find that res too small for reading text...

Run your desktop at native res, otherwise stuff tends to look bad, sort of like an overly compressed jpg.

DVI + Cleartype is nice and sharp
