System was becoming increasingly unstable, I was kinda blaming flash, but thought, what the hell, lets do a memtest.. booted ubuntu and .. the fcker lit up up the room within the first 2 seconds of the test.

So, out with 4 and now 4 remains.

The thing is, when removing them, they were *hot*, but only in one end ... some months back i got a 580gtx, and decided in my infinite wisdom to seat it right under the dimm's .. Today I am thinking less of that idea.
This RAM have been running smooth for like 4 years, any1 else have ram die on them like that ?? Just curious.

Never got RAM to do that. Managed to get a small firecracker off of an old Atlas 10K drive when one of the rectifier/polarity diodes flamed out.
Was it DDR2 RAM? I only ask as these days your now paying over the odds to replace it compared to DDR3 :(
Have you tested to check the sockets the fried stuff came out of still work ok?

- hehe, were you next to it when it happend? That would scare the living shit out of me. And yes, it's DDR2 ram... plan is to wait for haswell, and I think I am just gonna wait it out with 4gigs until then, no need reinvest this aging platform.

Yeah, I had the side of the case checking the cabling as the whole SCSI bus was acting up and the LVD U160/320 cabling is oh so delicate - in hindsight I assume the faulty electronics on the drive were causing problems. Hadn't changed anything, just checked it wasn't snagged or anything, pressed the power on switch and flaming light show happened.

I have to admit I did jump a foot or two away but within a second or two had cut the power (mental note: it never hurts to be able to reach the proper power switch to the PC...). Luckily none of the other components near it suffered issues (it was stacked with a few other drives and data was mirrored).
Apart from that moment, had good memories of that bit of kit - the awe of a set of drives (easily) being able to saturate the PCI bus....

Anyway, what was the warranty on that RAM?? I can't remember if they offer lifetime on that.... wouldn't hurt to check.... How many sticks was it? 2x2 or 1x4?

I can't remember buying RAM that didn't have a lifetime warranty. Look into it if for no other reason than to sell some DDR2 off to someone who needs it.
