You will learn that spending a lot of money on a car is a really bad thing to do. This is only part of the reason.

I saw that someone hit my bumper last week (leaving a pretty good set of scrapes) and I could really care less.

I wouldn't say that it is really bad. Some people really like cars. Others think of them simply as a conveyance.

A friend of mine just bought a brand new G35 coupe, he had it one week and while his neighbor was mowing the rocks in his front yard one flew out and put a nice ding in his door. Sucks but hey, it happens.

I don't care if my hoopty gets a ding or scratch in it but I would be a little more upset if the wife's '03 Maxima gets dinged up.

But I can't help but fantasizing as well. I got three dings on my new car before it was even a year old. One was by some lardass at Sams while my wife was in the car. She left like nothing happened. I wish I was out there with a baseball bat to seek some retribution on her car....or at the very least with a cart ready to accidentally be slammed against her car.

Well, that's why I'm driving a '96 Isuzu (paid for) and an '03 Maxima. We are not in disagreement on that.

I got a great deal on the Max ($22,400 brand new and 1.9% financing for 60 months).

I could afford another new car but I choose to save my money instead. I'll probably replace the Isuzu in another year or so. It only has 70k miles on it.

While I strongly believe in financial prudence (as I disagree with status cars, I mean hell I bought a $20k WRX when I could have easily bought a $60k+ BMW), I also believe that living poor and miserly today with the hope to be rich for a tomorrow that may never come is just plain stupid. Instead of being a cheapskate miser living a life of artificial enforced poverty, try working harder today, so that you can enjoy your whole life, both today and tomorrow.

edit: btw, door dinging is criminal misdemeanor mischief (vandalism) in most states. More than $500 damage (easily done with modern cars) can turn it in felony hit-and-run. If the person whose car is damaged files a police report and an insurance claim, the video from today's many parking lot cameras could be retrieved for damages restitution and possibly prosecution.
