I just got an a mobile 1500+ through a trade am going to use it for awwhile until i get an upgrade.

anyway on the cpu is a thin orangy film that looks to be used as some sort of protection.
i asked the trader and he said it was on their when it was pulled

so should i try to peal this thing off or what before i install it ?

use alcohol to clean of any residue that orange stuff is most likely some sort of oem thermal pad

Hmmm... got a picture to show us? Just to verify, it's a 1500+ right? Not a 2500+ and you made a typo? :) If it was pulled from a laptop, it may be the thermal interface material that particular laptop manufacturer uses. Normally AMD processors don't come with anything on the core, but retail ones do come with the thermal interface material (the grey pad) on the heatsink.

its a 1500 and is surrounding the core. not on it but around it so the core is clear on top
looks as if i can peel it of. no pics however. it jsut looks like an orange piece of plastic

It was probably a shim then. You can leave it on if you want.

Does it look kinda like this? If you're worried, take it off. It's only there to protect the CPU core from getting crushed by a bad heatsink installation.

Just take it off then. It's often used by laptop makers, I've even seen them on Athlon64s (specifically the eMachines M6805).

I don't know what makes you think this will work in a desktop. Then mobile Athlon 4's were based on palaminos and are terrible overclcokers ...

It will probably work, but like you said, don't expect a big overclock.
