which free email sites (netscape, hotmail etc) can you use with a third party mail application such as outlook, thunderbird, etc

Hotmail can no longer be used AFAIK, unless you have a paid account.
Not sure about GMail, that, IIRC, might be usable.

what is good about outlook? I never used it becuase i thought the regualr provider interfaces were so much simpler. However, I might swith over with gmail if you can convince me

Yes, gmail will work with Outlook, Thunderbird, or whatever you want. Yahoo and Hotmail will too if you are willing to pay for email. Not sure about any others.
