:(I have an Abit KR7A-133R with an XP2000 and 1GB of Crucial 266DDR. When my computer is off I can hear a high pitched whine like sound which is continuous. It is not very loud. I unplugged the enermax power supply from the mobo and the sound stopped. This is how I know it is the mobo and not the PS.
If I shut the power supply off the sound coming from the mobo stops. Is this normal ?

This isn't unheard of. Most people would tell you that the sound is probably coming from the capicators on your mobo. It's probably not anything to worry about, but you never know. I'm sure someone else can tell us more about this. Peace.

Capacitors it is. My Soyo board does the same thing when you unplug power connector from the board. Check your power supply out and make sure it is compatible with your MOBO. It should only do this when all power is leaving the board. ATX MOBOs are constantly powered for certain functions, Wake on LAN being one of them. If your Board does this every time that you shut down, then you may have a power supply issue or capacitance issue. heck this out thouroughly if this happening all the time. Check for proper grounding at the outlet where you plug it in. improper grounding will drain the board also and probably shorten it's life span somewhat. You don't unplug it from the wall at night do you?

I think you may have misunderstood the exact nature of my problem. I opened the case to make sure it was the mobo and not the PS. I am using an enermax 465 power supply. his whine I am talking about runs continuously when my computer is shutdown. It stops only if I shut down the power supply from the back of the computer. It also stops if I unplug the PS from the mobo. Is this normal ? On another site someone said it was. I don't think so but I do not know everything. If someone could help me with this issue or at least clarify it I would be most obliged. Thanks...

Someone must know.... My guess is that it is probably normal and that it won't hurt anything. Does anyone know different ? Soon I will be upgrading to a faster processor and motherboard. I can't wait. This coming weekjend I am going to go to a computer show.

Electronic sound from an energized system is normal. If the power is on even when the system is 'OFF' power is still reaching the motherboard.
If you have indicator LED on the motherboard there should be a Yellow one on indicating a 'Hot Board. If you turn off the power - or disconnect the
power connector, the electricity stored in the capacitors decays and the LED goes out and the noise stops.

We had some old Intergraph computers around my office when I first started a couple years ago. They had a high pitch whine to them even when they were not on but still plugged in. Unless it didn't do it before and just started I don't think you have anything to worry about.
