Just a little reminder about distributed computing and OGR-25. If you aren't already cracking, why not? ;)

Hi,

If you're not interested in making the full use out of your computer (especially if it's overclocked), skip this message. ;)

I just wanted to re-introduce the concept of distributed computing, but with an OGR-25 twist. No doubt many of you have heard of SETI (search for extraterrestrial intelligence) and rc5 (cracking security codes), but I'm sure many of you have not heard of Project OGR.

Project OGR is a very worthy project being used to calculate the best combinations of numbers to make rulers that can be applied to math intensive applications like radio astronomy and others. These are called Optimal Golomb Rulers. Unfortunately, the calculations to confirm the usefulness of each combination of numbers for a ruler are very intensive, and this is where world-wide distributed computing comes in. Home and office computers all over the world are each doing their little part to help out. Together, the computing power is absolutely enormous.

TeAm AnandTech is actively involved in helping to calculate OGR, and in fact is currently the 2nd place TeAm overall in the world. :) We were #1 for a while, but SlashDot (/.) has snatched that rank away from us and is now starting to pull away. If you would like to help us beat /. or just help out OGR in general, pop on over to the Distributed Computing Forum and we'll set you up. Or just post here (or there) and we can answer any questions you may have. All it takes is a small program that runs in the background, and which shuts itself off if you're using the computer. Mac, Linux, Windows, Unix, etc. are all welcome. :)

And best of all, it's fun! Several generous AnandTechers have volunteered their computers to monitor all the stats of work done for TeAm AnandTech, and Distributed.Net does the same for all the teams and individuals in the world. Compete with your friends, or compete against your friends ;)... it's all for a good cause.

Get crackin' and cheers,

Eug
