i just sold 3 pc's to a friends parents of mine about a year ago, for $700. these were nice machines... intel boards, antec power supplies, gskill ram all in nice cases.

and they all worked great of course. i formatted, installed win7 and ran all the updates on all of them. i set everything up beautifully.

well now that its a year later and money is tight, they want to sell them. first, theyre mad they cant get $700 for them (duh), and two of the pc's wont start they say. the one worked fine when i tried it, but when they take it to the pawn shop it wont show anything on the screen (im pretty sure they still dont understand there are multiple inputs on that monitor).

the other wont power on, and the power supply is fine and the motherboard lights light up, so its looking like a cpu problem. i suspect this because when i opened the case all of the power supply wires were laying all tangled up in the fan... and i have an idea why.

all these computers have been beat to shit. the cases look like they took a hammer to them. they were brand new cases, and now they wonder why the pawn shop doesnt want them. and they wonder why they dont work.

they keep trying to get me to fix them, but im about done. ill tell them that one needs a cpu, and pretty much fuck off. ive sold lots of pc's to friends and family, and never had any experience like this. it looks like they just tossed the computers across the room (they are the kind of people that do throw their mice and slam their keyboard when things dont do what they want). idiots.

thanks for letting me vent anandtech.

Geez, English man, do you speak it? The parents are friends of yours or are they parents of friends?

This is why you don't ever, ever do computer work (paid or not) for friends or friends/relatives of friends. Ever. Not ever. Don't even think about doing it. And if you do think about doing it, shoot yourself in the face first before you do it, because that will be far less aggravation than having to deal with what you're dealing with now.

:D thanks guys. i do all the computer work for all of my family, and some of my friends. believe me, i understand why its bad omen. ive just been lucky i guess, because everyone is happy with what i give them and especially when i build them new ones- i rarely get calls for any problems.

these people are my friends parents. oh yeah, they didnt want to go through the "hassle" of craigslist, but theyre pissed the pawn shop only gave them $35 for one of the pcs! no shit! they stole it from her, it was a $200 box! whatever... soon as i find a working processor for this last one then im done.

edit- now, since i have a truck and its so easy for me, they want me to move their stuff into storage. i am not kidding. they drank my pop too. i know this is all so cliche but its happening. she said U-haul wants "a crazy amount of money", which turns out to be $60 for 6 hours. i told her trucks arent cheap- i have to spend $350 to get my exhaust fix.

Feh. I do computer stuff for friends and family all the time. I just know how to set limits and have no problem telling them they need to call tech support or take the machine in somewhere if I don't feel like helping out.

On the other hand, I am owed a lot of favors for doing something I enjoy. Can't beat that.

I don't do any computer work for anyone any more, except very simple fixes for family. I hate being tech support guy. When my sister wanted a new PC, I told her to buy a Dell. I don't build computers for anyone but myself now.
