Just a few quick questions about DX 12.

I am not a very technical person with regards to video gfx tech so bear that in mind. I am getting Windows 10 when it comes out which will have DX 12. There has been specific talk about DX12 reducing overheads and generally making games run faster. Just a few questions:

1. Will DX 12 automatically make DX9, DX10 and DX11 games run better/faster automatically? Or do games specifically have to be coded for DX12 to take advantages of it?

2. If DX9, DX10, and DX11 games do get "some" performance gains automatically with a DX12 on Windows 10 and a DX12 capable card, what sort of gains are we realistically looking at?

GFX card wise I have just purchased an Nvidia Titan X which supports DX12.1 and am getting Windows 10 free update which will use DX12 so I am looking forward to seeing if there are any benefits to using DX12 for older games. (before people start berating me for getting a Titan X for gaming, I will use it for 3D rendering and will use and need the 12gb of vram).

I know there has been a lot of technical talk. I just want someone to answer those two questions in plain English to a none tech person. Thanks. :)

Thanks ShintaiDK for clarifying the situation. :) Even though I won't get any gains my old DX9 games it will be nice to look forward the newer games which will be using DX12 and will be optimised (hopefully no bad coding or developer pushing heavily un-optimised games).

It appears that Windows 10 might just be more efficient than prior OSs so you might get a small FPS bump in old games with the newest windows 10 wddm 2.0 compatible drivers once that's all out and released

Windows 10 also has an updated version of Dx11: DirectX 11.3.

Certain games are performing 10% or more on Windows 10, such as Witcher 3 and Project Cars.

Thats with the unfinished Windows 10 driver on Windows 8.1 and may not render everything etc. So lets see in a week or so how it is on the final. Also its only seen on AMD so far if I recall right. It could simply be a better threaded DX9-11 driver for once.

DX11.3 is just adding DX12.1 features to the DX11 API. No performance change.
