Ok bare with me as I try to explain this the best way possible.

I'm dating a girl that goes to a local university and lives in the honors dorms. Her pc is heavily infected with spyware/viruses you name it, runs like ass.
I'm going to reinstall windows xp and put spyware blaster, AVG, and adaware on there to keep her protected. I won't have any problems reinstalling windows/progs but I'm a little unsure about the networking.

After her pc is turned on it comes up to windows and she has to log in through the college server with a username and password. BTW it is her own personal PC. My main question is after I reinstall windows and all her crap what will I have to do to get her back on with net access? I'm sure she has to log on through the network to get net access but I've never messed with networking really. I'm mainly a hardware enthusiasts:)

I was thinking of just getting her to tell the network admins that she is getting her pc formatted and if there is anything they need to do before or after the format.

My main question : is it pretty simple to get her account back on so she can log on or will a admin from the school have to get on her pc and set something up? How do I make the log in screen come up everytime she boots up like it is now?

Is this isn't enough information let me know what you need to know.

please help, thx!!

I'd try just running Adaware and SPybot on there first to see if that solves any of the issues. Might stop you from having to reimage and such.

But if you do, I'd check and see if she got any instructions when she arrived on how to configure her computer to work with the school's system. Or like you said, check with the school's support people and find out what settings you need to set up in order for it to work properly.

hah, i tried all day yesterday to install/uninstall crap and beyond the point to try and repair. i hate trouble shooting and reinstalling would take 4 times less time than to work all the kinks out. plus she said that's fine.

i'll see about the instructions but thx for the advice franky!

Dont format, its not needed DP. Just do the following:

- Download Spywareblaster and update
- Download spybot and update
- Download Adware and update
- Download and install Firefox and Thunderbird for her.
- Boot into safe mode.
- Run all 3 programs doing full system scans.
- Boot back into windows.
- OMFG PROFIT!

...shes cute man, take care of her.

tried bro...i ran adaware last night after updating. it detected 3 cases of spyware and i was like WTF? knew something was wrong. by the time i get it to do anything it freezes. i've tried safe mode also. she just called me a second ago and said it won't even boot into windows. gg bsod saying important systems files are missing.

she also told me she doesn't have anything on there that she wants to keep since all her pics are on yahoo. it's a heck of alot easier for me to reinstall windows xp then to wait night and day for that pc to load the control panel.

thx for the suggestions though warcrow!!!!!!

I have been thru this many times. And a sure fire solution is as follows:

1) WIndows update - if you can Update Windows with all critical fixes - This is most important, if you cannot a reinstall is in oredr
2) Update anti-virus software and run a full scan after disconnecting network cable.
If not, reconect network cable and go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com and run a full scan
3) Download updates for spybot and adaware
4) Disconnect network cable
5) Run full scan with Adaware first and then Spybot.

If necessary download Hijackthis and/or CWSShredder and run them to clean out programs if the homepage in IE has been taken over.
Reboot and do Alt-Cntrl-Del to see which programs are running, stop all processes you dont recognize. Start Run msconfig - stop all questionable processes.

Should you re-install XP, your friend should be able to reconnect to the school's network just fine. Start network connections - Properties - Scroll down to TCP/IP and make sure its set to obtain IP address automatically and obtain DNS server addresses automatically.

thx for the help.

another question:

she said when she bought the pc and brought it up here right out of the box and said she had to pay 150$ or something for a different version of windows to use it at school? i'm thinking wtf are you talking about? but i did notice when the showing the loading xp splash screen that it did not have professional or home on the screen.

what you think about that?

Right Click on My Computer and select Properties. See what version of windows it says it's running. They probablyt had a standard image they wanted to load up for everyone that has the network settings in it. That's a scan if they charge $150 for it. There is no special version of windows that can do things that the normal version of windows can't. But call them up and ask since that's not something any of us would know about.

The pc most likely came with XP Home on it. Since she is on a domain, she needed XP PRO. They probably charged her for that.
