Just a few questions about compenents for overclocking a P3

I've got a P3 700 cbo that I want to try to get to 933 MHz. I've seen quite a few people on here that have been able to do this, but my question is can anyone give me a rough idea as to how likely this is.....very likely? Also, which slot 1 motherboard would you recomend for this? I was thinking Asus P3V4X. And finally, what about cooling? I've noticed that some people have been able to achieve high overclocks with the retail heatsink and fan, but I don't want to take any chances, so which heatsink and fan combination would work best? I've heard a lot about Golden Orbs and Alphas.

Thanks,

Can't argue with the choice of mobo, it's a good board. The gorbs are better than the stock HSF , but the Alpha is very hard to beat.

The ASUS is a good board, but you might do slightly better with a BX-based board from AnandTech's Editor's Choices. The Alphas are great as long as they will fit on your mobo.

There is no way to tell how well your particular chip will overclock until you try.

Good luck.

I would say the likelyhood of your success depends on more than just the mobo. First, did you get your hands on a good CPU/heatsink/fan. Second, if you run it on a BX board, do you have really good memory. Third, the mobo itself. Fourth, peripherals can make or break you; particularly on the BX boards.

Personally, I would get a good BX board, because even if you can't get to the 933MHz you want, the performance will be better than on a VIA board that is a little faster. Plus, I would try with the Retail heat sink and fan first. You will get the full retail warranty and may save yourself a load of trouble.

How come no one suggested the ASUS CUSL2?????

The ASUS CUSL2 uses intel's 815e chipset, and it's a lot more recent than the BX board, which is about to be superseded by the 815e chipset anyways.

If u dun want the integrated video you can get the CUSL2-C, which is basically the CUSL2 w/o the onboard video. If u're not familar wif those boards bear in mind that although the CUSL2 has got integrated video, like all 815e boards it also comes wif an AGP slot (in CUSL2's case an AGP PRO slot) so u can put in your own video card if you wish.

Well, I've got a cB0 700e with the ASUS CUSL2... it won't do 933 :( I'm currently running it at 847 at 1.7 ROCK STABLE. I run Win2k and I leave this comp on at ALL TIMES... I've left it on for like a month now continuously... hasn't crashed even ONCE dude. I COULD make it go faster by upping the volts to 1.75 and hence the cpu will do around 875, but I figured it's too much of a risk because I leave my comp on for yonks, and I dun want the CPU quitting on me even 3 yrs from now.

Yeah, you CAN get a good fan put on ur CPU... but it's CRAP NOISY. I've got the FOP38 on mine... it does a good job, I tell ya, but it's noisy. It's like a HEATER goin off constantly... a high pitched "verrr"... just keep this in mind also when u buy your stuff.

Yeah, sorry just realised didn't answer ur question about how likely it's gonna reach 933.

Apparently the week 20-21 700s are the best to overclock to 933... lots of success. But after the introduction of the 933 in week 22 or something (I'm not 100% sure on the week no. though) the ability of cB0 700s going all the way to 933 seemed to decrese... Damn it, even my week 21 (I think mine is anyway) Malaysia won't do 933.

BTW I'll change my signiture soon =)

Kelv: The man said "Also, which slot 1 motherboard would you recomend for this?", the
Asus CUSL2 is a Socket 370 board....

The P3V4X is a good Via Apollo Pro133A boad, and probably is one of your best options, because
it allows official 133 FSB support, with a BX board you won't get the official 133 FSB support.
With the lastest boards this means you wont get the 1/2 AGP divider to set the AGP frequency
to the specs: 66Mhz. Most of the Nvidia cards out there can handle more than the 66 Mhz, but
the choice is up to you.

Also the BX chipset is outdated it only supports AGP2x and IDE UDMA33, altough some manufacters
include external IDE UDMA100/66 in their boards and some people say that there's no difference
beetween the AGP2x and AGP4x....

So in the end is up to you...

As for the HSF, if you can get an Alpha go for it, their one of the best HSF out there. The
Golden Orbs are mid range products, they are a bit better than the stock HSF but worst than
the Alphas...

Have fun...
