Just a black screen in W2K

My friends computer won't finish booting in W2k....It has the loading screen then all of a sudden poof....a black screen with a blinking cursor...What could be wrong?

40gig Ibm..hd..
network card
Sb live
Kyro II
350watt p.s.

Has he tried booting up in Safe mode?

Has he tried removing all PCI cards except for the video card?

Yes it boots in safe mode and yes it sometimes boots when all pci cards are removed...
