Jury Summons Question

I got Jury Summons for July 31 - August 4 today and while I realize there is a chance that I might not even have to go and attend (you call a number the weekend before and it tells you if your group was called or not), I'm a full time student.

Obviously, this is summer, but starting September 11th, I'll be going back to school. On the form, it says if you are attending school during the time, send back a receipt for your enrollment or something of the like.

But, like I said, I will be going back to school the weekend before the 11th, so unless I get picked and the case goes to trial within that month, I have school to attend.

Does this matter? Do I still have to attend (I don't want to)? Should I send in my reciept for my Fall 2006 registration, even though the term doesn't begin until after my Jury Summons?

just send in your fall registration forms, and say that if it happens during that time then no can do.
Alright, I'll do this.

It says for me to write when I will be available, should I write when I expect to graduate?

I don't see what the problem is, the latest your Jury summons is for is Aug 4th, your school doesn't start till a month later. Not all trials are 6 month long OJ Simpson ordeals.... Even if you have to show up (which may not happen), and you're selected for a panel (which probably won't happen), there's a very very slim chance it lasts over a month.

I have an idea... why don't you go instead of making excuses?
I'm not making excuses. I didn't start the thread saying, "How can I get out of Jury Duty?" I'm not considering throwing it away and claiming I never got it.

Good job troll.

Pray tell, what is the purpose of this thread if it wasn't to get out of Jury Duty?

No one wants to attend Jury Duty? I was asking ATOT if I should even bother sending in my fall registration forms to see if I had to attend. I was under the impression that they don't summon full time college students. I was also under the impression that trials take awhile to happen, especially those by jury.

Look, the whole purpose of this thread is to see how to get out of jury duty. Of course no one likes it, but you still have to do it. I see no compelling reason for you to get out of it.

Dude, just go. It's not like there's a valid excuse to not to go. On average, the long trials only go for 2 weeks. Besides, it'll be an intersting experience.

Or, you may not get picked. I went a few months ago and was among the last remaining people not to get picked. Those lawyers can be very pick and they dismiss a lot of people. So if your random number doesn't get called, your in luck.

just tell them you hate all jews, ******, spicks, japs, chinks, and that you're a sexist pig.

I just read a thread the other day that told of a dude who got sent to jail for a night because of this.....

Just report for jury duty. I'm disgusted at some of the lame ass excuses I've heard when I was called. Do the duty, its called being a real live person.

They do summon fulltime college students... I got summoned when I was a student at Iowa - though I was a resident of Minnesota. (Funny... they charge me out of state tuition when it comes to money, yet they make me serve on jury duty). I had to serve which I wouldn't have minded... but I had to miss the presentation that was the capstone of my entire undergraduate education.

Although, it does somewhat depend on state (and county). I know that in Minnesota they summon students, but they can usually get out if you're busy and you ask for it. Iowa, however, sucks. I'm never going back to that sh*thole state ever again.

California has one-day or one-trial jury service (PDF, 68 KB). This means that people are not required to come to court for more than one day or serve on a trial more than once every 12 months. Typically if you are not chosen for jury selection after one day at the courthouse then your service is done for at least one year.
You call the day before to see if you're to report the next day. If on the day you report you don't get picked for a jury (or jury panel), you're done!

Being a student is not an excuse anymore, at least in NY that is. This is something I think is explicit BS. At work, someone can take over your responsibilities, and do what needs to be done, but as a student, missing one day of class can be detrimental to your studies if something important is taught.

You can probably inform the clerk of your schedule and they'll make sure you are not on a lengthy trial, if you are assigned at all.
