arg. I got the dreaded letter yesterday. I'm half tempted to ignore it.

if I'm not at work, no matter what the reason is, I don't get paid... I know I could claim financial hardship, but that will still involve taking a day off of work to plead with the judge, and with my roommate having moved out, I can't really afford to miss a day of work. on top of that, jury duty in NJ only compensates you for a grand total of $5/day :| so on top of losing several hundred dollars from not working, I'll have to pay a toll to drive to the court house every day and another $20/day for parking.

has anyone in the history of the world actually been arrested for ignoring a jury duty summons?

I haven't even heard of anyone who has done jury duty...

Is it exclusively an American thing?

Maybe. But I think in your case it is worth it to risk it. Throw it in the garbage. Most likely they won't come after you.

You really should ask your employer (HR) if they will pay you for time missed during jury duty. It is quite likely that they will. I did jury duty on a 3-day DV trial a few years ago and greatly enjoyed the educational experience. My GF was picked earlier this year to do a 3-week murder trial but the defendants did a plea bargain right before the the trial was to start. She was pretty excited about it and her employer would have paid her for all the time missed with no effect on her PTO. I strongly recommend not ignoring the summons, as you would likely be fined. You should be able to contact the court in advance by letter if you have to file a financial hardship.

It's called "contempt of court" it's HAHA funny....

OP don't just ignore a summons for jury duty, doing that can cause problems from registering your car, to having a bench warrant out for your arrest.
Stop whining, suck it up and do your damned civil duty.

I thought your employer was required to pay you your normal wages for time spent in jury duty for a certain number of days. That's how it is here in NotJersey.

I'll quit crying when they get a better system to find people to serve jury duty. heh.

I'm 24... this is the 3rd time I've been called since turning 18 (served on a case both times). meanwhile, my dad, who's 56, has been called once in his entire life, when he was in his 40's. he didn't even have to serve on a case *cry*

it's totally rediculous that they don't even provide parking.

He might be an independent contractor. I work with a lot of them and they get no benefit of any kind (but are paid enough to compensate).

I went to my jury duty even though I didn't have to serve (was never called, lucky me), but got out of the one two weeks after that one because I told them it was ridiculous to give me two jury duty summons.

They don't send it registered, there's no way for them to know he ever got the notice.

And don't most people not even have to go? You call some phone number before the week you're scheduled and it tells you if your group was selected or something.

And civil duty, what a joke.

They provide a parking pass but there is never parking, so you have to pay for parking, you have to pay for your transportation, and most people never get called.

If they wanted a true jury, they'd just select the people and those people would be assigned a trial. There you go, you've got a random selection of people.

If you do end up going, tell them that you have to attend a Madden Tournament and seem completely uninterested in the process. Then, when you're selected, offer the verdict to both Gene Hackman and Dustin Hoffman and run away with the money.

That is a complete load of BS unless the summons is delivered in a manner that they can prove you got it, like registered mail. Even if they called to see if you received it you could say no and they could NEVER prove you did. They use scare tactics to get you to go, it is that simple. I received a summons in the mail for trial once from a woman who hit me and was trying to get out of the ticket. I threw it away. She deserved the ticket and I never heard anything else.

I am not saying you should not go to jury duty but nothing is going to happen to you if you simply toss the summons in the nearest trash can and go on about your business. I used to get called every year for over a decade. I always went, but never got picked because I am a lawyers worst nightmare when he is trying to get his client off. I went anyway.

If you go be prepared to go again next year if they handle it like they do here. If you show up they put your name in the "reliable" folder and call you again once a year has passed. You keep getting called if you show up. Like I said, I got called every year for over a decade. I finally got tired of being called in to never serve so I just threw the last summons away, and I have never been called since.

Stop whining you pvssy. I have jury duty the end of this month. You'll probably lose more than I'll get paid (my job DOES pay you for jury duty). If you want to enjoy American freedoms, you'll have to do the one thing your country asks you to do.

haha.

the first time I was summoned for jury duty, I was 18. I did my best to look like a total juvenile delinquent in the hopes that no lawyer would want me deciding the fate of the trial... greasy hair, ratty clothes, painted my nails black, and I wore my super huge wallet chain.

I ended up as the jury foreman.

/sigh

Don't ignore it. Why risk having a bench warrant issued? Imagine getting stopped for a minor traffic infraction months down the road and then arrested...
