This is in part to blame on the systemic corruption of the US government, namely its insatiable desire to be at the behest of lobbying, without which there may very well have been a remote shutoff valve at the rig, as there are in other nations.
As another article questioned, when you look at the cleanup cost of this (not to pretend that even unlimited funds can truly clean all of it up), how far would they have gone in alternative energy infrastructure?
