person A has a filter that only allows emails thru that are on his safe list. any email that gets sent to junk email folder automatically gets a response that says "your email was rejected because you are not on the safe list, call to get placed on the safe list".

person B has the same filter.

person A sends an email to Person B but doesn't put person B's email address in his safe list. person B also doesn't have Person A's email address on his safe list.

so Person A's Email is sent to Junk Email Folder by Person B's email program. Person B's email program automatically responds to Person A. Person A's email program also responds in kind.

and there we have it a Loop.

Stuff like this happens all the time. I see it a lot with listserves and "Out of Office" memos.

1) Listserve message goes to all.
2) Auto-reply is sent back to "sender", which is listserve.
3) Auto-reply message is sent to everyone on listserve, including sender.
4) Auto-reply message goes out to "respond" to the previous auto-reply message.

Usually takes an administrator to intervene, unless some kind of loop-checker is in place.

I guess in this particular case, it's a bit more difficult to catch as you are getting a new(er) message and not a reply/forward of a single message. It's still possible to check and catch (as mentioned above) but it's also possible some admins haven't enabled said feature.

I just have all my email go to the trash. I figure anything important, eventually someone will call.

/I kid. My email is rather large because of my lack of trashing stuff.
