Junior Research Project, Need Help!

I have to do a Junior Research Project, and I had decided that i would do my paper on Affirative Action and how it affects college bound students, but after reading some material i have decided it is not a very good topic, and my view towards the issue was immature and provincial. I now need some help, one of the options for this project was to do a paper on american lit., but it couldnt be biographical, it must be analytical or critical in nature. She gave us the exmples of Symbolism in Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, and Pain and Death in the Poetry of Emily Dickinson. Could anyone help me with ideas of a topic for this, and if so where i can find some good information about it? I know this is a tech forum, but someone must have a clue about literature...
