so...what does it do?

Quite simple,

Overview

Microsoft DirectX is a group of technologies designed to make Windows-based computers an ideal platform for running and displaying applications rich in multimedia elements such as full-color graphics, video, 3D animation, and rich audio. DirectX includes security and performance updates, along with many new features across all technologies, which can be accessed by applications using the DirectX APIs.

i know what it is, but does it address any issues? fix any bugs? really improves performance?
i'll wait for a review before doing anything since i dont have any problems right now with existing directX.

If you have games that work fine now then this will do nothing to improve that. MS releases a new build of directx 9 every few months. It really is confusing how they update it. Instead of incrementing it with things like dx 9.101 they keep the dx9.0c and make people search for the build number 9.29.1962. A lot of gamers repeatedly complain they have dx9.0c installed but a game isn't working and are told they need a specific version dated xxxxxx.

Personally I think they should include it on Windows Update(especially if it has security updates etc),anyway as a PC gamer myself I always update my DX ,never had any issues and this is over the last 3 or 4 years since I have been updating DX on both Vista/Win7.

I have seen a few gamers get caught with some games not working( especially demo's) because of an older DX version installed on their PC.
I remember The Witcher Demo that would not run on Vista unless you had the latest DX9.0c build installed at the time.

Thanks Mem, I really wish they included this with Windows Update. Especially since it includes security updates...

I've never installed this before, yet it's saying I either have the same version or a newer version currently installed...?

Running Windows 7 64-bit here.

Try downloading from Filehippo http://www.filehippo.com/download_directx/ ,extract the files after download and find the DXsetup exe.icon or file after and run it,always works fine from this site in my experience.

Schadenfroh you're welcome, maybe one day Microsoft will realize it's important enough to go on WU.

Shouldnt your Win 7 computer have DirectX 11 by now?
I remember all the hype for DirectX 11 over the past year and now all of a sudden no one is talking about it.

You still have DX10/11 etc on Win7...it updates the DX9 part.

This is the semiannual update to DirectX, Windows 7 includes DirectX 11, this simply updates it to the latest build of DX.

I always wondered why when I've had DXx.x installed the game I was installed wanted to install the same version all over again. It would make me cringe when that was happening and now I know what it was ;)
