Funny, I was just thinking about this, but actually from a photographic standpoint. The reason there are so few images of the Normandy landings isn't because nobody took photos, it's actually because all the film used by about 90% of the photographers went to one officer who, when boarding one of the landing craft to head back to England and develop the film, dropped it into the ocean. More film was lost when an assistant accidently melted the negatives in his excitement to see them.

Of course, all the gamers on here could probably draw a map of Normandy, complete with the German defenses and landing zones, better than a map of their own neighborhoods.

one of the most important days in human history.
if it had failed, and the allies pushed back to the sea, the US and britain might have concluded peace with the germans, who then could take russia. Nazi germany might still be in power today.

Sorry but no, we would have just nuked em eventually...

No. The Russians would have just taken all of Europe.

Either way.

All I've been hearing about lately is 666. Thanks for something worthwhile, and I feel ashamed I forgot about this day.

you know, its sad. all i heard on the radio today on the way to work was the 666 crap and they were talking about horror movies.

why is it that no one can talk about anything serious or important on this forum without some jackass coming in and making jokes or smart ass comments? This is a serious post/discussion, some people need to really grow up, show some dignity, and show some respect for once.

and don't tell me "this is the internet, you should expect this" because thats bullsh!t and you know it. just because its the internet doesn't mean that you can be a jerk all the time.

I never got why they didn't bomb the crap out of the land a whole load more before sending troops... I mean, there shouldn't have been a single bunker standing when the men arrived. Clearly it's a *really fvcking stupid* idea to send men across an open beach against heavy machine gun fire from within bunkers.... I guess they just had to go for it and keep the element of suprise and take it before other german troops were notified...

More amphibious tanks would have been handy also...

They did "soften" up the defenses somewhat before the landings with naval artillery, but not weeks in advance or by bomber because they didn't want them to catch on that that is where they were going to attack.

They tried.

The airstikes mostly missed their targets and the prelanding naval bombardment was too short and not sufficiently intense to disable much of the defenses the Germans had.
