To whoever suggested she'll try to jump it in a wheelchair... the wheelchair won't fit in such a narrow gap.
For the same reason, I doubt it was freefall.
Safety fences?! Why not just get a 2 foot wide piece of plywood and fasten it down, covering the gap completely.
