Jumping into this whole nas deal with a ds415

I think the time is right.

I read the anand review and it seems these NAS products have gotten to the point where they are refined enough for production use.

It seems these devices are almost like a mini low power server with iphone style apps you download into them.

If I wanted to run the synology camera app to manage my foscams can I also use the same unit as storage at the same time?

Do you guys use these NAS boxes as primary storage for photos etc.. While using the main hd for apps etc..

What do you think about synology? Are they pretty good when it comes to reliability and support?

I have a 3TB iSCSI LUN tied to my desktop PC; I use it as scratch space for DVD rips, video encoding, etc. It benchmarks pretty well.

And all my movies are stored on the server. Not photos though - I don't have many of those anyway.

But mine's a Homebrew. The Synology should be similar in performance, honestly. Synology support is reportedly very good and their OS is top notch.

I just got it. It seems so far idiot proof. It is tiny and quiet as hell. I just go to find.synology.com and it finds it and starts the install process etc.. pretty simple and polished.

Wow this thing kicks ass. Photo Station 6 is real nice and elegant. Very easy to use. I am migrating all my security cameras now to Surveillance station 6 (from blue iris which is a good software I recommend it) , I can now get rid of my dedicated pc for that function.

The cpu just loafs, and ram only 15% used. I am also using note station for passing trading notes etc.. (remote access via cisco anyconnect to the ASA) its like a mini private cloud.

shared drive for data etc.. I wanted something for shared folders but this thing does much more.

anyhow total cost for this package (4 WD 2TB drives, the DS415+) was 982 dollars.

This is one elegant well designed bulletproof product.

The drives in the unit run a cool 29c 24/7

The Synology is tiny and quiet. its in the office and I never hear it, only time was when it did the initial indexing when I was dumping a load of stuff in it but it was not bothersome. after that its silent.

I have tons of photos, the Photostation 6 just by itself is worth the price of admission. Nice to be able to share photos in a private cloud and the web interface is really nice.

the companion ios apps are really polished. What you pay for is definitely the quality software and the R&D. It really provides lots of bang for the buck.

Thanks for the info. I've been looking at setting up a NAS and this is exactly what I wanted to hear.

np, if you have any questions feel free to ask.

This is a demo of the actual photo station 6. I would definitely recommend the DS415+ and the WD reds. Photostation 6 is really fast, and works great with the ipad. I can set it up where when I take a picture it sends it right away to the photostation as well, or upload/create new albums via the app etc.. It looks like something Apple would design.

So far Rock solid product. non stop 24/7 operation and it just works. So I say DS415+ passes the reliability test part of this quick review.

Another interesting thing you can do, Attach external drives and share them as well. I attached an 850 evo 500gb where I stick my oracle box images on and just run virtual machines off the shared SSD.

performance is quite nice running the VMs off the SSD.

I've had a Synology for a couple years, only think about it when I get an email to update the software. Smooth sailing, does what it's supposed to.

I bought and Asustor and I have the same experience. Runs quiet and never needs attention. I have the AS5004T.

So much of the software is shared between the different NAS companies that you can tell that they are little user friendly Linux machines. The apps are great. I can store a lot of files on my NAS and grab them from anywhere. I run a teamspeak server and it work well.

Yeah now adays these little Appliance servers pretty much kill the reason for running a Windows server in a small business. Easy to maintain and rocksolid, no windows hassles. A colleague saw my DS415+ a few weeks after I bought mines and he ended up ripping out all the Windows servers he had in his offices and swapped them out with DS415+ units. He is using them for File shares and Surveillance station. He has been real happy with them.
