Jumper settings on HD/OD

Okay heres my problem, i currently am trying to get 1 hard drive and 1 dvd/cd-rw combo drive working on my computer... i have tried several settings and sometimes one or the other will not work.
I currently have my HD on one ide cable by itself as master. The dvd/cd-rw combo drive is on the second ide cable as secondary master. the computer sees the dvd drive but i cannot open it nor does nero detect it. ive read somewhere that i have to set the hd to slave( dunno why) for the dvd combo drive to work. any hints/clue/guide to other useful faq on this issue is very much appreciated.

Making 2 assumptions, you are using two ide channels (two cables connected to two different motherboard connectors) and Windows XP.

I think the easiest way to do it is to set both devices to "cable select" and let Win XP figure it out. It would also make it simpler if you are using the end connector to the device (DVD and hard drive) not the second connector on the cable.

ohh i see.. i took the pin off my hd which made it a single/master, and made the dvd/cdrw drive a slave. it opens and reads and all. but i can;t get it to burn.. so your saying use the end part of each ide cable?
