my landlord would like me to build him a pc to use in his entertainment area to use as a "jukebox". any ideas on what o/s and hardware would be good? i can come out of the sound card and into an amp/mixer/speaker setup. this would be for mp3's and cd's to play on. music only.:)

hercules gaming theater XP soundcard is really good for hooking up to external speakers and amps and stuff..
at least a 40 gig harddrive, 60 might be better.. all those mp3's and stuff take up space.
personally, i'm a intel fan... i'd go with a low end P4.. say 1.5ghz or so and 256mb of ram. But since its just for music, you dont really need anything blazing fast (wouldnt go less than 900-1000mhz ).. so something cheaper could work too.. wouldnt go any less than the 256 of ram though.

edit* just realized this isnt for you.. does your lanlord know much about computers? he might be more comfortable using windows 98 or XP rather than windows 2k

Like a P2 400, CL Sound Blaster Audigy, cheapy PCI vid and all that, and a 100gb hard drive. More than enough. Windows NT I would say, more stable than 2k in my personal opinion.

youre a retard if you think nt 4.0 is more stable then win2k pro, i would get a slighlty faster system then a 400 if hes ever gonna switch over to wma or mp3pro it will take more processing power plus the deiference in cost is negligable.

If you're going to build an mp3 box.. i HIGHLY recommend this:

http://www.shuttleonline.com/sv24.htm

it's a barebone all aluminum case with Shuttle motherboard. all you need is your Celeron (that's all you really need), RAM, HD, and a CDROM drive. the rest is build in. i saw it for $249 at fry's.. so.. i think you can get it done for less then $500 total. it looks nice, decent job of playing mp3s.. and damnnn small.

diesel- that thing looks perfect, except for the fact that I bet the sound-card in there is below average.

Let me guess, no PCI slots?

one pci slot but you really can't use it since it's blocked.. but since you're going to hook it up to a home stereo system.. who cares about the onboard sound.
