The Democrats do seem to want to sweep her through the processes, confirm her without questioning her, because it was The Messiah's choice.

If she is the one who will be amongst the highest authority in the country in a lifetime non-impeachable position, it's not a Democrat vs. Republican cat-fight to determine exactly how such a person feels on issues important to the nation.

The GOP cannot stop the confirmation. The GOP shouldn't make it their goal to stop the confirmation. Both parties should pry into what her judicial beliefs are, and every Senator should make their own individual judgments on her completely ignoring party lines.

But that's not the way government seems to ever work

Had a very long wait for an appointment yesterday and ended up watching about 2 hours of it live on the tv in the lobby. I can definitely now say that Swayze and Snipes played a female much better than I gave them credit for.

What amazes me is how the rebublicans continue to try and make abortion an issue:confused:

Do they really still think they can overturn Roe v Wade? After 36yrs and 38 subsequent court rulings upholding it. Three rebublican administration couldn't get it done even when they had a majority in Congress and the white house they couldn't do it?

I understand these hearings are all about political grandstanding and appealling to their voter bases for the 2010 elections but this is beyond ridiculous. And it shows the IQ of the constituants in many states, they are fighting a battle thats been over for almost 40yrs

You must not have watched the hearings on Roberts then. It comes up from both sides with every nominee.

Have you ever watched a confirmation hearing?

All the senators do is ask bullshit questions figuring press coverage. Its video proof for their constituents to know they are at least doing something than twiddle their thumbs all day. Most people don't watch CSPAN.

The nominees almost always do the same thing. Duck and dodge question saying they don't want to prejudge things.

Its just a big dog and pony show. Nobody is gonna be like Robert Bork and spit out anything that will look bad.

They're just desperate to keep the anti-abortion voters supporting them when they can't really offer them anything. Seeing them raise the issue helps with that.

As for it being over for almost 30 years, first, it's over 30 years, but you might be surprised that there may well now be four votes ready to overturn it, were it to come before them.

Had McCain been elected, you might have not been able to say that at all.

These hearings are all too filled with idiotic attacks from the right and shmooze from the left. The substance is little and far between. The Republican Senators come across like bad wingnut from the user posts on right-wing blogs. 'Ya, uh, Judge, what about following foreign laws on our constitution, what about that huh?'

The analysis we get from good commentators is far better than what comes out of these hearings, and the media is no help as they look for a 5 second sound bite they can use, however out of context, out of hundreds of things said.

But having said that, there is some value in watching her respond. You do get to know her better watching that. For what it's worth, she's very much a 'centrist', and I'd prefer a more liberal justice who would be dedicated to the values in the constitution, not merely grinding out opinions with technical competence.

Well right now it is nothing more than a show due to Republicans have no avenue to block her even if they wanted. And Democrats already deciding before the hearings to vote her in because she is latino, not a radical, and no way do they deny Obama. It is what it is. All I can say is luckily for me she is replacing somebody who has similar views.

Tha number of votes Republicans have has nothing to do with the quality of the hearing.

The article goes into much more concerning things she's said, essentially she agrees that states can have restrictions or bans.

So she is for states rights?

I'd say she lacks a basic understanding of the 14th amendment. That is a great quality to have in a supreme court justice.

+1

I'd say our entire legal system lacks an understanding of the 14th amendment, since it has set up the rule that corporations are legally 'people' who can corrupt our politics from it.

Ginsberg's nomination hearings were rather substantive. I remember quite clearly how embarrassing it was for the questioners to be given a thorough lesson in the law by Ginsberg. She practically had to explain their own ill conceived questions back to them.

It was a true intellectual miss-match.

It's very interesting to watch the leftist posters defend their and racist bitch positions against questions regarding the very purpose of the Supreme Court. It's even more sad to see people support her and her what appear to be basic lack of understanding of the document she is to uphold.

In these hearings she has openly admitted her prejudice and her past ruling and words have confirmed it. She does not view The Constitution as the ruling document, no clear understanding of precident except to bring it up when it supports her racist/anti-freedom views. Overall she gets a big fat FAIL, but she get's bonus points on being coached really well, like all nominees are.

Agree that it's become a dog and pony show no matter what side, really sad that it is so.

I think she'll do fine as a justice. She lives for her work. Yeah, she talked out of her ass with the latina remarks. If every word from everyone was analyzed with this scrutiny, we would have no political representatives. we wouldn't have a president for that matter. we've all said stupid things at some point. anyways, the court could use a little diversity as a reflection of our nation.

I have given many speeches to audiences from 10 to 1000. NEVER have I tried to say that my race is better than another. I have said so many stupid things in my life, but never so bad as this racist bitch.

Fuck diversity, this is about the supreme court. In the eyes of non-racists it doesn't matter what you look like.

We will judge you based on the content of your character, and her she doesn't believe in those guiding principles.

Then you won't have a problem kicking Thomas off the court. He got to where he is because of affirmative action. Uncle Tom motherfucker, ass kissing house negro, right? Oh, I'm sorry, that's the only kind of black person you like, right? You're a disgusting excuse for a human being. And what's with the constant "bitch" thing? You hate women? Or just women in a position of authority over you? Or are you compensating for something else?

Congratulations - you have gone from putting mere words into someones mouth, to putting an entire novel in someones mouth.

No, I just really don't like racists like her and when somebody is that kind of person they deserve to be insulted and called whatever we please. Judge based on content of character, not color of skin.

I have seen her character, she has displayed it, and it is bad.

Like you could judge anyone's character as bad. Someone like yourself is no position to criticize anyone on anything beyond how properly burn crosses on lawns.

Awesome! We have the left's answer to anything. If you don't agree with her appointment you are clearly racist.

I'm sorry you can't understand simple concepts. Disagreeing with her appointment is ok, but when your entire reason to disagree is because she is brown is what is known as racist.

This statement has got to rank as one of the stupidest things I've ever read on this forum. You almost make the other libertrolls on this board look intelligent.

Ok Sotomayor has been on this earth for 55 years, how many of those years have you known her personally? Is all this 'bitch' calling just due to one comment she made? Do you know this woman? I can almost guarantee that I could find one statement in your past and could FOREVER label you as a racist, however I don't know you.

Huh

Last I checked he said he didn't want her on the board because he thinks she is a racist. I don't think a single person here said that they didn't want her on the SC because of her race.

Any chance you could point out where someone said that?
