Judge orders Take-Two to show him Bully so he can determine how bad it is.

This is f'n crazy. It's a freak'n video game for f's sake! :disgust:

http://www.destructoid.com/judge-to-tak...t-3pm-and-ill-decide-how-bad-it-is.htm

Defendant Take-Two is sending a player capable of finishing the game and guiding Judge Friedman through the most violent portions of the game (otherwise known as ?the good stuff? ? which was repeated various times in the case) along with a Playstation 2 and video equipment. When the defense asked that formal paperwork and bonding were to be provided for this request the judge snapped back and said ?Do you know how long that would take? The game would have shipped by then? and in the middle of a mumble he cut them off and silenced the room with ?NOT A CHANCE IN THIS WORLD?.

detailed notes from blogger:

update 2:
Judge is not blocking the sale.
http://www.destructoid.com/

At 1:51, Niero called, saying that the judge will not prohibit the the sale of Bully. In the time that he played the game, the judge said that he did not see anything so violent that would require the game to be held from being shipped. The judge and Take Two employee used a cheat code in order to skip around in the game and play through various parts, including the more graphic portions of the game. The judge said ?There?s nothing in the game that you wouldn?t see on TV every night,? and that he ?wouldn?t want his kids to play the game, but that shouldn?t mean that the game won?t ship.?

haha that's kinda funny.

Look, whatcha gonna do? Someone sued and it's gotta be settled. At least the judge has the sense to tell the Lawyers to STFU and get him a kid who knows how to play. Watch...the judge and the kid will be busting it up back in his chambers by the time it's all over. They'll both come out snickering and trying to keep a straight face.

Unless I'm reading wrong the worst that happens is the ESRB rating goes up from Teen to Mature (sounds like it should be there already.. IMHO).

In the meantime, the developer is getting great press off of the whole controversy.

someone just needs to assasinate thompson.. that lamer POS... if I were a judge I'd tell him its NOT THE GOVERNMENTS JOB TO DECIDE WHAT YOUR KIDS CAN AND CANT WATCH AND PLAY... its the parents fault they need to educate them on the ratings system.. and to stop letting under age kids play adult games..

im so sick of the bible thumping minority telling the rest of us whats proper..

Wait till Jack(off) Thompson and this judge play the game and actually see that it's almost the opposit of what they expect. In the game, you actually get punished for doing with wrong thing. For instance, if you push or hit a girl...you get detention, which is filled with a series of mini-games that are as exciting as you might want them to be to pass the time.

The real question though, is weather or not Rockstar was originally going to make a game about being a Bully and switched things over once the heat was on.

I'm betting rockstar wrote it as-is rather than later bow to pressure. They have seen more controversy than about anyone and they knew good and well it was gonna come the moment they started thinking of such a game.

Without the moral decision making component I can't imagine it being a very fun game. Whack kid, take lunch money, rinse...repeat.

Although I'm 100% in favor of parents being the ultimate decision makers here I guess I can understand why someone would get bent if they saw a Mature game being released as Teen. You can't expect parents to watch every moment of every day, and you can't expect them to pre-play a game ahead of time. The judge seems to have some form of clue here so I'm interested to see how it plays out.

It would be like if an R rated movie got released as PG-13. There are some kid-marketted movies that you would rather shoot yourself than go see so you would rely on the rating to determine if your kid should go see it alone.

Parents should ultimately be responsible but if you are deliberately giving those parents misleading info then expect the wrath I guess.

Being such a huge gamer I guess I'm surprised to hear myself at least agreeing this should be in court 😕 This is a first for me. Anyone agree with me or think I've lost my mind?

keep in mind I'm a guy who sat back with some popcorn while going through the stroggification scene in Quake 4. Violent games are not offensive to me.

If a movie is released as a PG-13 movie it isn't an R-rated movie. It's PG-13. 😉

I don't think this ever needed to make it to court. The ESRB(?) is there for a reason, if they can't be trusted they should be replaced.

touche.

I think the reason this headed to court is because someone thinks the ESRB blew it. Based on my sketchy details of the game content I guess I could see why the question was raised.

I know little of the plaintiff though. Is he some kind of ultra conservative nutbag or something? Cuz lets face it: somebody somewhere is ALWAYS gonna take offense.

He's a at least a nutjob. Think of the Reverend's wife in the Simpsons with a law degree.

Apparently he may be a bit of a liar too, offering to pay a charity $10k USD if a certain type of game was ever made, then never ponying up the cash...

Does it really matter to the majority of people here how the ESRB rates the games?

I'm not a bleeding heart or anything but would you want a 13 year old playing Bully? 😛

Yes it matters to me.

If it doesn't say 'mature' there is a chance it sucks! I want them to get it right 😛
