Judge orders man not to have girlfriend for 3 years

PETERBOROUGH, Ontario - A judge has ruled that a 24-year-old Canadian man is not allowed to have a girlfriend for the next three years.

The ruling came after Steven Cranley pleaded guilty on Tuesday to several charges stemming from an assault on a former girlfriend.

Cranley, who has been diagnosed with a dependent personality disorder, attacked his girlfriend in an argument after their breakup.

He tried to prevent her from phoning the police by cutting her phone cord and punched and kicked her. He finally stabbed himself with a butcher knife when police did arrive, puncturing his aorta.

Doctors say Cranley has difficulty coping with rejection and runs a high risk to re-offend if he becomes involved in another intimate relationship.

Justice Rhys Morgan said Cranley "cannot form a romantic relationship of an intimate nature with a female person.

"That is the only way I can see the protection of the public is in place until you get the counseling you need."

Cranley had already served 146 days in pre-trail custody, which Morgan said was enough jail time in this case.

His lawyer says the no girlfriend order is the first of its kind that he has encountered.

If anything I'd call that a light sentence, if a little weird. If he attacked someone, then stabbed himself on purpose, I'd say he needs some time in the ol' mental ward.

Edit: also, what exactly are we voting on? Is "what" right? The idea of saying he can't legally have a relationship for 3 years? Or the arguably light-weight sentence for someone guilty of assault, both on another and himself?

It's better than getting sent to prison where he'd be someone else's girlfriend.

Yes, it is correct for the courts to order that a Doctor's orders be followed. If the Dr. had said he needs to be in a psych ward, they would have committed him. My only question would be ... How do the courts monitor this? Do they follow him around to see if he talks to girls?

But he wouldn't have to deal with rejection then.

Give this man a prepaid WoW account. Problem solved!
And it is much less expensive than all that psychotherapy.

What if he sucks? He'll probably stab himself after his guild tells him he's no longer welcome on their quests or something.

Not sure what is permitted in Canada but it wouldn't fly in the US.

I say it's wrong.

This guy should have either been punished or sent to a mental hospital. I don't know Canadian law, but how can a court tell you that you can't have a relationship with another consenting adult?

I think it'll be overturned, and the court would have missed the chance to do anything with this guy.

You missed part of the story:

I didn't miss that part of the story. Even if all that is true, it doesn't mean that the judge has the legal ability to do that.

Sounds to me like just another person using mental illness as an excuse for bad behavior. He should have gotten some jail time. Be ordered to follow doctors orders and be made to get a big tattoo on his chest reading, Low-life woman beater, fvck at your own risk.

Yeah, this is what it seems like. Even judges could be politicians.
