It just got me wondering something that UltimateBob posted in the Pool table thread.............

Let's say you're the guy that sold the pool table, and the people that bought it want their money back. You say no, it was sold as is! Then they say they're going to take you to small claims court.
They call up one of these tv Judge shows and they accept the case (or whatever they do)........ Is it the same as a normal court, or can you refuse to go on because of the tv aspect?

Just curious.

PS-- Has anyone here or anyone you know of been on one of these shows?

The TV "court" is not a court but a legal mediator and you sign a agreemnet to that effect.

it is BOTH parties wish to go on, you can;t force anybody.

usually you file a small claims action and these shows see it and if it looks like a good case for TV they offer both side to go on TV. Both sides get money and a lot of times even if you lose you don;t have to pay anything.

From what Judge Judy has actually said on her show the participants enter into a binding arbitration agreement when they appear on her show. I would assume that all participants have to agree in order for it to go forward.

Both parties have to agree to go on the show. I would refuse to go on one of those shows - to be publicly berated as if I was an idiot. Plus, both sides get money from going on the show - I wouldn't want a person I was suing or being sued by to get a dime.

i beleive the loser gets nothing. they just don't have to pay for what they lose.

the winner gets whatever won+share of losers.

or something like that.

i would only go on the show if i know for sure i would win. some people that are on it i wonder why they are. one lady was scamming on ebay and Judge judy nailed her pretty bad.

If this is true, what kind of retard do you really have to be to go onto one of these shows thinking you won't be held liable for scanning/conning/stealing from someone?

I mean you have to get paid or something or it makes absolutely no sense. There are some legitimately educated individuals who go onto these shows with horrible cases and lose thousands of dollars - the show itself has to be compensating them or it simply makes no sense.

I watch these shows all the time. The only times I've seen people treated like idiots, are when they fit that description.

they pay your debt if your found liable. If I owed someone $5000 and they wanted to go on Judge Judy I absolutely would.

Same here, but I bet they don't get the smartest cookies in the box, just people that want their 15 min.

I don't know if all shows are the same, but I know some of them have a pool, like $5000. The winner gets his winnings from that first, and then the rest is divided between the 2 parties.

Nope. There is a pot of about $5000. Both parties get $100 for showing up and then any judgement comes out of that pot. After the judgement is handed out, the remaining cash is split between the two parties.

Heh, I've actually been to Judge Judy with a friend, although I didn't appear on it (or even get to sit in their audience) since I wasn't a witness. I was left in the back with food.

Judge Judy pays everything. Nothing comes out of the pockets of the visitors, and the winner will get whatever she decides to give.

They gave me free airfare and $75 dollars spending money, which was cool. I got to chill in California for a few days too.

If anyone is interested, it was an episode where my friend, who is diabetic, sued his girl for hospital bills after she threw his insulin out of a window and broke it. He ended up hospitalized for 3 days afterwards. lol
