My oldest Friend in the world is a Senior Software Engineer on the F-35 project and sent me an email with this link showing the JSF making it's first vertical landing yesterday. Amazing that thing was flat out immobile while coming down. No wobble at all just a nice steady vertical descent. Here is the Video.

Can some0one tell me the difference between the F-22 and this one? Aren't they both filling the same role? or does the F-22 have some secret American systems installed?

The F-35 is a general purpose fighter while the F-22 is an air superiority fighter.

F22 is an air superiority fighter, it keeps the skies clear for ground attack, surveillance and support aircraft to do their jobs; the primary mission of the F22 is to destroy an enemies air force while it's in the air. F35 is primarily a ground attack fighter/bomber with air-air capability but what it will mostly be doing is attacking ground targets.

Wouldn't that make the F-22 useless? All the the wars the US is probably going to be fighting are going to require a fighter that can do something in regards to the ground.

Which one of these two got canceled? the F-22

First step to bombing a country into the stone age is wiping out their air force. You want a plane designed specifically to do that. Only after the F-22 does it's job can the F-35 do it's own.

Well it would make sense to cancel the F22 since no known military is even close to catching up with the previous generation of fighters. I'm sure the air-to-air capabilities of an insane multi-role fighter are more than adequate to handle the odd 40 year old MIG.

By the time the US gets into a war where they have aerial dogfights the F-22 would be out-dated, The main focus right now it sporadic insurgents with nothing more than an ak-47 and RPG's. Also F-18's aren't that bad.

Neither aircraft has been canceled.

The air superiority fighter's role is extremely important as an unchecked enemy air force can deliver extreme damage, one the F35 wasn't specifically designed for.

Dog fighting isn't the sole role of the air superiority fighter, its job is to engage anything flying on the other guy's team from fighters, bombers, helicopters, surveillance or support aircraft.

The F22 is as much for defense of the continental US as it is for offensive roles in other areas of the world.

I heard that Obama cut the program to end with 170 - 190 aircraft.

That doesn't sound like canceled to me, it just means that for right now the US Military has fewer aircraft on order than they originally did. It doesn't mean they can't or won't order more in the future. An advanced fighter program can't be flipped on or off like a light switch. These aircraft will be in service for 30 years at least and an entire industry exists to support them.

I still have a soft spot for the Harrier (plus I see them quite a bit visiting different MoD bases).

That doesn't mean that this kind of warfare will always be the main focus of the US military.

I read the British are unsure if the F-35 will actually be able to take off and land on their new generation of carriers, so they are looking at adding catapults to the new models, which were originally designed catapult free, based on the F-35's advertised performance.

Russia just announced its next generation fighter. We're falling behind. We need to develop faster, smarter, and more powerful jets or else we'll lose our military advantage.

Somehow, I doubt that having a better airplane is going to make a difference if the US and Russia ever get into another shooting war. If Russia wants to blow their money on useless military gear, they can go right ahead.

That advantage was lost 7 years ago this day.

Gates capped the F22 run last year. The cost benefit for the original procurement run was to great.

The F15, F16 and F18 production lines are still open if we need to crank out fighters.

The F35 is still in hot water due to cost overruns and schedule slippage.
Joint service multi purpose aircraft are useful, but many times the trade-offs have compromised the capability. The F4 Phantom had serious comprises that impacted it in Vietnam; same with the F111 Aardvark. The V22 Osprey has had issues, partly due to the multi service requirements that had to be built in.

The C130 Hercules is about the only one that has well served all service branches plus the Coast Guard (that I can think of).

The Russians have great aircraft designs - their manufacturing capability leaves them always a generation or two behind.

We may not fight russia directly, but they're pretty happy to sell military hardware to anyone with a large enough checkbook.

I remember people were talking about this in November 2006...even before that. "2010" they said. Nope, maybe 2012 if we're lucky.
