CASTLE ROCK - Police say several students at Castle Rock Middle School could face charges after the children took nude photos of classmates and distributed them on their cell phones.

Castle Rock Police detectives say as many as six girls may have been photographed, and police think possibly 50 students may have either viewed or forwarded the photos on their phones to other students.

Investigators say the students in the photos apparently had their pictures taken as part of a dare and had no idea how many others would ultimately see them.

"They were aware some people would see them, but such a large number, I don't think that's true," said Lt. Douglas Ernst with Castle Rock Police.

"Obviously the concern is these pictures getting on the Internet and available to everybody," said Douglas County Schools Director of Communications Whei Wong.

Wong says administrators at the school first learned of the photos on Monday and alerted parents Wednesday with phone messages and letters. They also notified some parents by e-mail. The school also made an announcement to students Wednesday.

It was a surprise to some students on Wednesday.

"I haven't heard about it yet, except for the announcements," said 12-year-old Janelle Hilmes, a student at Castle Rock Middle School.

Police say the students could face jail time and fines depending on the intent of the photographs. Investigators say charges could be filed next week.

The school district is also investigating to determine a punishment.

The Douglas County School District is encouraging parents to check their children"s cell phones for inappropriate photos.

Police say if parents find the images being circulated, they can forward them to detectives to determine if the pictures are still needed for additional evidence.

Students told 9NEWS phones are also not allowed on the Castle Rock Middle School campus.

Additionally, the school told students on Wednesday that any cell phones found would not be returned to the student at the end of the day, as they were previously. Instead, a parent must come to pick up the phone.

What's the problem with a cell phone even in elementary school? It's how you use it that matters. If it's only used for emergencies and not calling/text msging during class I don't see the problem.

fixed

Stripping is bad... however, this does pose a delicate question: how to take a shower/bath/etc.. without stripping?

Do they really think parents are going to call the police to "give evidence"?

All that would happen is the phone would be confiscated, as well as the student themselves becoming part of the investigation.

I mean seriously.

Your use of "each other" does not fit with what the article says. "Each other" implies that the kids whose pictures were taken were also the ones who distributed the pictures. According to the article, the pictures were taken by other students under the pretense that they would not be widely distributed, but they were widely distributed.

I only point that out because people will come in here and post without reading the article on the assumption that it is similar to the other case in which a girl was charged with child pornography for taking pictures of herself.

I hope the system comes down on these jr hight students HARD!!! Its not like the cops/da/etc. have anything better to do (e.g., homicides, crimes, assualts, etc.)

Oh, no... got to use the strained resources to stop this rampant taking pictures of each other because... its like a gateway crime!!! once these students start taking pictures of each other.. they will ultimately become hard core killers!!!

Yea.... for the pvssifaction of america!!!

(by beat.... i mean punish. i'm sure some of you will cry "you beat children?!!" some need to feel the hand of god since timeouts are the reason kids dont care about being punished anymore)

nothing wrong with giving a middle school student a cell phone. i had one at that age and it was of great use! Its just the parents need to teach there kids that taking nude photos of yourself and sending them to your friends is not a good idea..and while sex is not a bad thing and should not be something to go to hell about, it is not appropriate to send photos like that to people around school, and act like a slut...expecially at that age.

Forward to detectives for additional evidence, or so the detectives on the case can get further kicks out of it..? They are kids, they are gonna do stupid stuff as they grow up...who cares?

kids in middle school should not have cells that can call everyone anyway. parents are to blame. there is no fear of god put into children today. they will keep this crap up untill they really do get punished. just to see how far they can take it.

that is what bugs me. they are kids, they did something stupid. nobody was hurt, nobody was forced, bad decisons were made and now some of them could get charged for a sex crime and get that lable for the rest of thier life. we are talking about 14 & 15 year old kids here. jesus just slap them on the wrist and move on.

I'd prefer them to fear something that actually exists, like "Dad." :p

I just wish my name was Gordon, so I could say "Fear of Gord", talk about unleashing the "Wrath of Gord", and performing "Acts of Gord."

Oh, and then change my last name to Freeman.
