Honestly, its pretty shocking that most people have such dated hardware with active accounts, I can't imagine trying to play modern games on a 8800 level GPU.

I was thinking the same thing. I realize those of us who even post on GPU forums are the minority but I still find it hard to believe we have so many people on 5 year old hardware (looking at you 8800) when a 6850/6870 is such a great deal right now (has been). Guess it comes down to priorities.

Ya, but how important is this stat? It has nothing to do with Nvidia's total market share in discrete space. It doesn't tell us if the discrete GPU market is growing relative to itself. All it tells us is that more people are buying APUs than discrete GPUs. Since for every new computer sold, every time an APU is counted, Nvidia will always have low "total" market share based on how the metric is currently counted unless people start buying discrete GPUs in larger quantities than APUs.

That would be similar to counting Toyotas and Hondas for every Lamborghini sold and then claiming that Lamborghini is losing total market share among all car manufacturers. That's just stating the obvious, isn't it? Lamborgini could have doubled its units sold despite losing total market share.

I agree with you, i just said they lost Total market share.
I have also continued saying that today's total market share numbers aren't useful because Intel and AMD are getting one point for every APU they sell.

Those numbers are totally useless, they doesnt show the Total GPU (Discrete) market, they doesnt show total CPU market, they doesnt show Total APU market.
They only show total GPU (APU + discrete) units sold which is useless because they count both APUs and Discrete GPUs together.

Those numbers are totally useless, they doesnt show the Total GPU (Discrete) market, they doesnt show total CPU market, they doesnt show Total APU market.
They only show total GPU (APU + discrete) units sold which is useless because they count both APUs and Discrete GPUs together.

I'm not entirely sure if the 1 point Intel gets is comparable to the 1 point AMD gets.

There is a higher chance that anyone buying an AMD APU is interested in the complete package while the enthusiast buyers of Intel CPUs like the 2500k will probably not give a damn about the GPU in it.

Gaia, that's exactly why these stats are not very useful for us. The problem is the APUs are still counted since the actual sale has occurred, whether the GPU in them is used or not.

AMD and Intel might as well start swinging CPU cooler market shares in front of Noctua, Cooler Master and Thermalright and claim that they've sold more than anyone else (well ya since they're all bundled with the processor!).

Healthy companies, competing and providing good products should be good for the consumer.

But otherwise, it doesn't affect us consumers, at least immediately.

Although yeah, people do try to use numbers (numbers doesn't lie but they can be presented in different ways that will lead to different conclusions, so always be careful around plain numbers) as fuel for fanboy wars.

But these numbers make sense, AMD and NVIDIA at around the 50% mark, a bit more here a bit less there, since that is how the performance and quality with slightly different strengths and weaknesses.

And for example it seems AMD ties their APU revenue on their CPU division even though the GPU on the APU, which is their most compelling selling point, drains resources from the GPU division.

Information is good, it is simply a question of understanding the limits and the scope of the data, which isn't simple sometimes.

As a quick example I can say something shows an increase of 50% over its predecessor - sounds good.

Or I can say that same something as an absolute speed of 15 fps.

The data is the same, but the difference is substantial.

One can say "Hey but that is obvious to see!". Sure, because we are informed on the subject. But no one is informed on every subject.

I personally never understood why people argue marketshare. But that's just me. Performance, sure - because it affects you directly. Market share? Makes me think some of you guys got more than just interest vested in these debates.

It's important to a certain extent. If market share gets too far out of balance we have a problem. Developers typically use market share as a triage list for features/testing/debugging in game development.

To what extent? Intel has always had the greater portion of market share, yet they supported the least amounts of features.

Then nVidia has generally held the discrete crown, but the number of nVidia specific games (ie features) is countable on one hand per year.

Eitherway, rather than turning this topic into something it's not, I'll bow out. It isn't something I have interest much so sorry to derail.
