Funny that Mauer, also a first overall pick that wasn't a fuck up and has more athletic ability and awards to his credit, never gets more than passing mention as being a great story. All the while everyone is so enamored with Hamilton, who blew his money on drugs and finally decided to clean up once we was broke and need more millions. Not to mention how he claims he has to have his "partner"/entourage follow him everywhere just to keep him off drugs/alcohol. Sure sounds like a story to which the average fan can relate (which is what the announcers love to say).

Lester is good story ... Greinke is a good story ... even Ankiel is a good story. Hamilton is not. There are three things to remember from last night's event. None will be adequately covered by the sports media, but all three were absolutely epic:

1) Rick Reilly's racist comments.

2) Morneau played the gracious winner to perfection.

3) The greatest choke job in HR derby history.

How many home runs did Morneau hit and how many did Hamilton hit?

Correct me if I'm wrong but everyone knows the rules of the HR derby before it starts... So why not save up energy for the last round

I still don't see why people want to make it cumulative when there are obvious rounds.

Yeah, you def have a point but he was on a huge roll. I think he hit 8 after 8 outs.

Know what? The reason they're enamored with Hamilton, is because he's really, really good.

Jesus Christ, there's no pleasing you people, is there? You hate them when they use drugs and then you hate them when they STOP using drugs.

Maybe you should start following soccer.

I think its more that this kid was literally the best HS player ever drafted and was expected to do this. Its not a "miracle of jesus christ all-mighty" that he is a good ass player, its just sad that he could have had HOF, monster numbers if he didn't blow 4 million on druggies.

Mauer would get some attention too if he were in contention for the triple crown.

Uh, he hasn't been in contention for over a month ... He's not even the best player on his own team. He had an awesome April/May and has managed to maintain Gehrig-esque RBI numbers, but let's not get superlative.

There must be a lot more junkies out there to love on this guy than I realized.

This guy is a fantasy baseball monster playing in texas. Too bad they had to trade away their best pitcher to get him.

I do follow soccer, and I think Ronaldinho will mesh well with Kaka after today's big move, but this thread is more baseball related...

And I fail to see how "there's no pleasing you people" applies. It's not unexpected that some people are surprised that a crack junkie gets showered with attention when there are better players with more inspiring backgrounds.

However, it is representative of modern America, I will give you that. All the love for Hamilton is due to the same reasons People magazine and US Weekly can pay millions for photos of celebrities. That same mentality is just bleeding into baseball.

No denying that ... I may not like the guy, but he's contributing significantly to me winning at least one of my leagues this year.
