How low will they sink?

Compassionate conservatism strikes again:

Josh Bolten has submitted a 5 point plan to Bush to win back some of his base he is steadily losing as a result of his bungled policies on Iraq, and other poorly mismanaged policies. Here is the deal;

1, Deploy guns and badges. Play to the neo-con base on immigration. Tell them that illegals pose a serious threat to homeland security. Use the fear card.

2, Make Wall St. happy and continue the tax cuts. Play up the fact that tax cuts are a meaningful part of keeping the economy rolling.

3, Brag more about your successes. Also jump on the Democrats with their "negativity". Make the Democrats come out with plans of their own, and contrast their plan with yours.

4, Reclaim security by playing and talking tough on Iran. This has become your new trump card. Don't be shy about playing it.

5, Court the press, don't shut them out. Getting nasty and vile with the press, gets you nowhere. Get them on your side.

Not surprising at all, the reddest states are the one least exposed to immigrants thus have no real first hand knowledge that they are not evil.

If mudslinging isn't good enough, political plays, ignorance and fearmongering always work.

Hmmm... anything about actually GOVERNING?

Didn't think so. Today's Republican party is a complete fraud filled with liars and murderers.

Yeah, no calls for accountable small government making fair and reasoned decisions, just more of the same.

Low, but probably effective. The twin threats of gay marriage and terrorists really helped Bush in 2004, using illegal immigration and Iran the same way will probably help the Republican party as a whole. The only thing that might bite them in their collective ass is that while their base trusted them on the gay marriage and terrorism issues, I'm not sure they have quite the credibility on Iran and certainly not on illegal immigration. The people most outspoken against illegal immigration seem to view the Republicans as just as bad as the Democrats in that area, in contrast to those most opposed to gay marriage, who viewed the Republicans as their saviors. The problem is that, in contrast to gay marriage, opposition to illegal immigration isn't really a "Republican issue" in the sense that most Republicans, and their financial backers, are probably in favor of the whole thing. It is a terrible issue for the Republicans, because it's one that they have a different viewpoint than most of their supporters.

Same thing with Iran and terrorism...their base really liked the "no-nonsense" attitude Bush displayed by invading a country that had nothing to do with 9/11 (I know, it confuses me too) and the way he talked tough and landed on an aircraft carrier, but the mostly rational way we've been dealing with Iran isn't winning him any points with the righties...and it's not making him look much different from the Dems on the issue. And he can't really "get tough" with Iran because we're not done getting tough with Iraq, or Afghanistan for that matter...too many wars at one time will turn off even the most firm Republican supporters.

From a purely Rovian standpoint, they are up a certain creek without a rowing device. They don't have any "good issues", this year (and even more in 2008) will be about the normal issues, the economy, education, health care, and those are issues where the Republicans are fairly weak. They can't run a "Vote Republican or Die/Vote Republican or you'll have to get married to a gay guy" style campaign, but God bless 'em, it looks like they are going to try anyways.

If I had to bet money, they would sure as hell go to the republicans winning once again.

Read my lips... national politics has nothing to do with making our lives better, safer, or anything else. It is marketing, marketing, marketing. It's Coke/Pepsi, Bud/Miller, Ford/Chevy, Republican/Democrat. And both sides play the game.

Not making any judgements about how things should be... just calling it like it is. So you shouldn't be shocked when you see a five point bullitain detailing how to bring the president's numbers up that doesn't involve policy. The D's released a memo almost identical to this one a couple of months back. No shock there either.

Both sides are equally cynical and out to "win".

With all due respects to Whooseyerdaddy, the election of 06 and 08 may well be about making lives better--or in the case of GWB, lives worse. Lets us face it, we have been exposed to bad public policy for almost six years now, have a almost unwinnable war in Iraq that can spin out of control, and the poll numbers for GWB largely reflect a growing distrust for GWB. But the point is and remains, the fruits of bad public policy has not come home to bite us in a big way---YET---but at the same time most of us realise its inevietable that it will----its a matter of when not if.----that same sence was present in the 04 election--just not as prevalant. Kerry failed to connect on that issue and lost.

WE all know that debt and a huge trade inbalance cannot be sustained---making us vulnerable to anyone calling in the bill. Bush can saber rattle on Iran but cannot be effective in diplomacy or in the UN----he has done been labeled the little boy who cried wolf on Iraq--and the rest of the world will ignore him---Bush has also lost any moral leadership or authority--over gitmo, Abu Grav, and foreign rendering.--not to mention domestic spying.

But as I have posted before---its still all up to those chickens out there that sooner or later will come home to roost. The chickens chooses when to come home to roost-----regardlss of what Rove or J. Bolton think. They still have six months to come in this year and still beat the election---my bet is some will--just a few big ones and Bush is doomed----the gas chicken better not grow to $4.00 a gallon if Bush knows whats good for him.

But if Bush's plan is to wear the tough sheriff badge----he is likely to become an open world and domestic JOKE when the rest of the world's tough guy sheriffs show what they think of their fellow world leader. And roundly rebuff every one of Bush's diplomatic efforts--if nothing else----just to show what they think of him.

Now a days----when Bush says follow me----everyone else marches off in such a way to show they don't follow Bush.---just real hard to spin that fact.
