Jordanian double-agent killed CIA officers

Al-Balawi was arrested by Jordanian intelligence more than a year ago. However, the Jordanians believed that al-Balawi had been successfully reformed and brought over to the American and Jordanian side, setting him up as an agent and sending him off to Afghanistan and Pakistan to infiltrate al-Qaida.

Lets see, the US guys that were killed were the holy warriors good guys and the sneaking fellow that we wanted to murder someone else in their bed and would have been the good guy if he did that was instead the bad guy for doing the same thing to the holy warriors who hoped to use him to further their ends.

IMHO, its more of a case where there are no good guys to be found on any side. And it sounds more like a feud between the Hatfields and McCoys than a legitimate way to solve real problems or even fight a war against terror.

All we are in is the import export business of kill kill kill. How quickly everyone learns.
 
Well regardless of your feelings on our current foreign policy, these were still men with families who will be missed, they were performing their jobs and defending our country.

We may not be pursuing the wisest course of action, but these men had no say in that.

My understanding is that the protocol did not break down, as not searching someone in a case like this is the established protocol. It is meant to foster trust with someone they are courting to do their bidding. Quite probably, the protocol will be reviewed and changed after this incident.

The CIA officers who were killed are men who have dedicated several decades of their lives to fighting for our country. The fact that you equate them to those we are fighting is downright fucking disgusting.

Well if that's the case then people need to adjust their expectations. TSA doesn't seem to care about my feelings when I get pulled out of line for a pat down.

As we should well know by now, who is or isn't on our side can change from hour to hour and it's simply foolish not to expect to be betrayed. I thought we learned "trust but verify" a while back.

The black and white worldview is pretty remedial. There are no good guys and bad guys, the world's a bit too complex for that. The US does what is in the US' best interests. However, that still doesn't put the US on the same moral ground as Al Qaeda or the Nazis or your boogeyman of choice. But let's not pretend all US forces and intel teams wear pure white either. After all, democracy is the worst form of government except for all the others. Not exactly a ringing endorsement. 🙂

I'd say that is a pretty ringing endorsement considering how many other govts types over the thousands of years of civilization have been tried.
 
Contrary to what you may see and hear all the time on 24, the intelligence collection world does not revolve around "established protocols" for everything. In this case, someone simply made the decision to skip the search. It's called a mistake... human error... albeit a fatal one. Learn from this and move on with operations.

That said, nothing should take away from the mourning we should do for these fallen warriors. Mistakes, or not, they will be missed something fierce.

I agree, and understand your point. I comprehend the theory of why they wouldn't search, but it seems to be stretching the theory a little far. A simple patdown should reveal a bomb strapped to someone, and it is easy to explain why everyone coming onto a CIA base must be patted down without offending people who are ernestly considering helping us. I was just mentioning that this not searching is apparently the established protocol, once someone has reached a certain level of apparent trust.

Edit: someone above says there is no established protocol and that this was a simple oversight. It's not what I've read in several news reports, but who knows, maybe the reports are incorrect.

Palehorse still has a good point, a lot of good people on our side died, and even worse they have famdamily who grieve.

But sadly when we as carelessly deliver that same fate to the other side and rejoice in our own dubious forward progress, when we kill anyone who even happens to be maybe within 10 miles of a bad guy. Not only does the same grieve occur on the other side, a legacy of NEW hatreds is built.
