In fairness, while it looks good in Virginia, they've still got 3 precincts left. I'm guessing they favor Webb, but it's not over yet. Then after they they'll probably have a recount.

This is horrible news imho. The last thing I want is for the Democrats to control everything (once they win the Presidency). I guess that is the independent in me that prefers BALANCE over complete domination.

The heat is on the dems if they take both houses. If they do nothing with it they may find themselves on the wrong end of the election come 08.

I thikn them capturing both houses is the best thing imo. I have been hoping it would happen for months. These republicans needed to be put in their place.

/totally agree

having the Dems in control of both houses does two things: gives the Democratic party a platform to run on ("here's what we accomplished in 2 years and why you should re-elect us"), and gives the Republican party a platform to run against.

here's hoping the 2008 election is about real issues.

Agreed. Great summary.

I'd love nothing more than the Neocons hammered down, the real Republicans surging, and the government reigned in.

If they did all of that, I'd come back to the Republicans no problem.

Agreed. I don't mind seeing the Democrats control the house or the senate but to have them control everything is just as scary as the Republicans controlling everything.

I'll give the Dems a medal if they return us to balance budgets. I just don't want to see the money sucked from the military/war on terror (okay, maybe slowly away from Iraq), and then spent on new social welfare for seniors and illegals.

They talked about that last night on Fox.

This election was about the past, mainly Iraq.

In 2008 with Bush gone the Democrats can't run on against the past and have to offer something other than we aren't Republicans.

Republicans will have to do the same. Should be a very different election.

I'm amazed you even showed up, today after all of your predictions and choices were shot down in a momentary blaze of electoral sanity, yesterday. Why am I not suprised to find you trotting out your new range of lies and distractions you can spew for the next two years?

You arent the only one. I 'hope' with the defeat lastnight "compassionate conservatism" aka big govt conservatism is gone and dead.

Republicans are most successful when they run on a true conservative platform. When they try acting like democrats they lose the base and moderates wont vote for the imitation if they want the real thing.

I'll give the Dems a medal if they return us to balance budgets. I just don't want to see the money sucked from the military/war on terror (okay, maybe slowly away from Iraq), and then spent on new social welfare for seniors and illegals.

Lets hope they balance the budgets with reductions in spending, instead of increasing taxes.

Come on Harvey. What he said is pretty true for the most part. Hopefully the next election will be a more positive one.

I wouldn't even care if a Repub gets elected in 2008 as long as the Dem's control Congress. Monumental win last night.

I agree with you 100% there but I think something is truly wrong with the accounting system that keeps track of all the money supposedly spent on the war.. I think it is over $300,000,000,000 now.. 300 Billion.. sounds like a lot of unprosecuted theft going on to me

I think the word "past" in his post was what made it difficult to comprehend. I think he meant that this election was not about which party had the best ideas, but it was just the American people telling the Republicans to wake the fu<k up. It was about all the mistakes we made about Iraq, but not about the Democrats plan to fix it (Since they don't have a unified plan). None of that is really debatable. I also agree with the last part of his post that 2008 will be a much different type of election, that will more/less be around ideas.

Iraq will continue to dominate events for the next few years---even if we cut and run---we will then have to deal with a period of anarchy. In my opinion, the best possible outcome on Iraq will be to develop a bi-partisan plan that the nation can commit to.

In other areas also, the republican past will continue to dominate events---as domestically, repairing republican damages, will be doubly difficult when many of the pay me now bills come due. And just like Reagan, this nation will spend much time in the doldrums, just repairing the damages. Before any progress can be made.

With GWB&co. still lurking back there, badly wounded but still clueless---and given that---they are likely to go back to doing what they do best---namely engaging in partisan politics---and figuring out how to blame the democrats for everything.---as political spin and revionist history evolves into new art forms. But that will be the most interesting thing the next two years will answer---how will GWB interact with a congress unwilling to be a rubber stamp---and a congress that will ferret out the real truth about the past with increasing velocity as we approach 2008.

Nor does it at all surprise me that Rummy resigned---the longer he is out the less he can remember when he does hit the witness chair---so rumor has it he has been quietly at work shredding documents---and we can only hope some friendly types in government have saved duplicate copies.
And that Rummy has missed some damning documents. But I went on record that Rummy would go if the dems took even one wing of congress. I also went on record the GWB might offer the job to Lieberman---a really attractive offer now from the Repub standpoint---because it could then tip the senate back repub.

But I look for two years of really dirty politics---and just hope GWB confines it to that--the alternative may well be GWB asserting dictatorial powers---with the only thing able to make that impossible is to get the truth out to the American people about GWB past LIES.
