Is this normal in social leagues? What in the world is the reasoning behind this? There's no slaughter rule, so it's not to keep runs down or anything.

some leagure limit the hr becuase at that level the doods can hit hr at will. this makes the hrs more of a strategic use.

the league i played in last year, i think we had the same rule as nick1985's league.

we had a guy who could go yard every time. i think it is to discourage guys like that from doing so, and to keep the ball in play so people can actually play when that guy goes up to bat instead of just watching him hit dingers. i could be wrong though but it does make sense, for a "fun" league.

Anyone ever figure out why?

Because in my league, nearly my entire team can hit HR's at will and only getting 2 HR's makes you use strategy.

Think of them akin to lifelines in Who Wants to be a Millionaie.

Hmm, I've played a lot of softball, and maybe only once or twice on a field with a reachable HR fence. If I hit a bomb on a field without a fence, I'd just stop at first.

Do you know how many feet the fences are in your league?

Depends on league rules. In some leagues I've played in, unlimited HR's were allowed. In others a +1 rule was enforced (meaning that once a team hits a home run, they can;t hit another until the other team hits a home run). In still others, a total of 3 HR per team, per game was permitted.

I personally like HR limits. Makes the games much more interesting. Not to mention that in some of the leagues I've played in, just about every player could hit a home run at will.

OK, these explanations make sense.

I guess it's time to channel my inner Ichiro Suzuki and learn how to slap hit all over the field.

it's pretty common for leagues to limit the amount of 'out of the park' home runs a team can get in a game.

infact i've played in 2 leagues and they both only allowed 1 per game.

What happens when players are on base, and the batter gets a home run/out? Do the runners get to run home, or do they stay in place?

I can see a few reasons behind this - I've also played in a tourney where you have an "in-field" base run, or whatever the proper term is, can't remember it.

Basically, you can hit the ball, and if it hits the back fence without being fielded, you're limited to going to 2nd base, etc. This is on top of the HR rule - one team I was on, we'd line it up because a few of us were good at placing our hits in open portions, and getting 3 on base, then our HR hitter would come out and bring the 4 of us in. If you have a decent team, you were looking at a minimum of 3 HRs per inning.

fortunately, we play against other law firms - homeruns are rarely an issue. Heart attacks? Far more likely.

In social leagues, you can just hit a ground ball for a home run everytime. Just never stop running and a defensive error is inevitable. I played in a league once where whenever I was at bat, they would just throw it to third to prevent me from going past second... lol good times

Because I played a team whose players were all good hitters, who had a couple of guys who would hit HRs every time at bat. These guys were hitting 4 and 8 or 9. They would load the bases and then these guys would empty them over and over again. They mercy ruled every team in the league normally in the first or second innings.

They were unbeatable and should never have been in a social league.
