Hi guys, I have a brand new system, everything is less than 3 months old, everything works just fine. Except...


My HDD, or lack thereof I should say.

My SSD(vertex 4) works fine, is plugged into a SATA 6GBs header on the mobo, all good.

My HDD on the other hand is brand new.WD 1TB Blue. Upon entering disk mangement and selecting to format it, it starts, but after 5 mins, my pc freezes. Totally. No Alt-ctrl-del, no task manger, nothing.

This happens everytime. This is my 3rd HDD that has given me problems, and havent actuzally had a working HDD in my pc since i built it. Everything is on my puny 128GB SSD.

Why, when trying to format my new HDD does it freeze my pc?

Thanks in advance for your wise words. Im at my wits end...
 
Faulty disk or connections. Try with a different cable/slot, else replace the mechanical drive. Not worth your time fixing it, believe me.

Hi there. This is the 3rd 'new' HDD, none of which has actually worked.

My SSD works fine.

I have changed SATA cable, changed headers on the mobo, changed power cables.

COmplete specs-

Asus z-77 V, i53750k, gtx680, ,corsair AX750, corsair vengeance 8GB ram, the ssd is a vertex 4 128GB and the stupid HDD is WD caviar blue, built on Jul 2nd.

this was my first ever self build so am new to this stuff but learning everday.

Because i have tried everything, one would beg to differ the hdd is faulty. 3rd faulty hdd? ah, no.... motherboard? IDFK really, help....
 
what do you mean, disconnect everything else. everything? dude, im new, please elaborate. Im 11.

I have an ssd currently running my OS and everything else.

If I disconnect that how would i be able to do anything?
 
He meant that you should disconnect everything else except the HDD in question and do an install with Windows. This is to test if the HDD is in any way faulty.

If normal formatting methods didn't work, try with WD's range of software first. You should be able to get it up and running with the Advanced Format Software. If it still does not work, use the Diagnostic Tools to check for any error with your HDD. If all else fails, send it back for warranty/RMA.
 
In your bios under the advanced settings, set your SSD & HDD to 'hot swap'. This may stop your freezing issues with that HDD.
