Figured this could go under software or networking so ill try here first. Ive been asked to see about integrating about a dozen macs into our exchange 5.5/2000 mail server to allow for access to public folders etc. Got outlook installed but it wont start due to network communication error while typing in the password for the mailbox. I have no idea how to go about getting mac to join the domain for the correct permissions. Anyone have any leads?

I really don't know if you can actually join it to a domain. I have not found anything on actually going through the proccess, and I have never tried.

What OS version are the Macs running?

Here are a few interesting web pages I found.

Another thing you can try... I've never used Outlook for Mac, but on the PC version, if the computer is not a member of the domain that the exchange server sits on, you can do this.

Go to your mail properties. Under the properties for the Exchange Server, there is a setting that you can choose for "Logon network security". Try setting it to None. Now, instead of trying to pass on any password/security info, it will just bring up a box with username, password and domain name boxes.

I have run into problems with PC's in one Domain, trying to connect directly to a exchange server in another domain. This will takes care of the problem in my situation. May not be a possibility for you, but it's worth a shot.

Great ill try that thanks. its looking like im having dns issues with the test mac, and i have no idea where to adjust that in a mac. Tcp props all seems ok but its definately having issues resolving the server name. Will connect by ip and identify the mailbox but thats as far as it goes without more network errors

Well, I'm not sure where to adjust them either. Do Mac's have Host files like PC's? You could hard-code it in there.

------

After some research I found out they do have host files, here was a person's explanation of how to create it.

Create the text file called Hosts, using SimpleText, saving it into your System folder. Then go to the TCP/IP control panel and select the file via the "Select Hosts File" button.

In the Hosts file, put in a line as follows (using your server name and its IP address)

server1 A xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

The version of Mac OS is really important, if you want any relevant information.

Why can't the POP3 or IMAP standards be used? These are standards no matter what OS you are using. Just find the right email client.

They don't integrate with calendering or contacts, if that's not the case then there's really no reason.
