Johnny Depp was robbed! (and no, this is not a parody thread)

He was robbed of the Best Actor award. Sean Penn? Give me a break!

Additionally, Geoffrey Rush not even nominated? Ridiculous.

Whether this is a parody thread or not, I do think that non-dramatic performances are given little to no recognition. Even in other years, I don't think a performance like Bill Murray or Johnny Depp gave would've been seriously considered either.

It seems that if your role has you playing (a) someone who lost a loved one (b) a handicapped person, or (c) a dying person you have a ten-times greater chance at Oscar recognition than a good comedic performance. If your character cries, add 10 points.

I was just thinking about you Ogg. I have before and afters of the wife after her boob job. Not sure if I can post them on AT, but if I do, you'll be the first to know.

As the title states, it's not meant to be a parody thread, it is a legitimate complaint thread.

And I agree 100% with your analysis.

Much easier to play a normal person in crisis, then a pirate, I think.

The Anti-American got what he deserved last night - nothing. Screw him and his movies. Penn in Mystic River was amazing. He more than deserved it over some 21 Jump St loser.

Are you saying Depp is Anti-American, and Penn is not?

Depp's character was so different from the others that a comparison is difficult. I really liked Depp's performance, but it's not surprising that a "serious" character got the nod.

Who did Sean Penn lose to the last time he was nominated (for his performance in "I Am Sam".)

edit: Yep, I was right. He was 'ROBBED' when Denzel won for his role in 'Training Day'. Russell Crowe ('Beautiful Mind') or Penn should've won that year.

penn should have won for his work in Dead Man Walking as well. Cage took it that year for Leaving Las Vegas.

Expressing anti-war views IMO is different from saying "The US is a bunch of lazy dogs who got what they deserved 9/11 and I'm embarressed and despise being associated with the USA which is why I live in France, despite the USA being the reason for my immense success". In two different interviews, no less. I've refused to see any Depp movie since the first interview and feel more strongly after the 2nd round/interview. His publicist put a spin on it saying "the magazine quoted it wrong" - what bs, screw you Depp.

Which, if you've seen the movie, is a pretty poweful portrayal, much like Jack Lemmon's in "Days of Wine and Roses."

And if you dig deeper into the types of characters that they applaud, you'll see commediens get the short shrift. IMHO, Steve Martin should have been nominated in 1984 for his role in "All of Me." Critics gave him awards but his peers? pftthhh. (btw, best actor went to F. Murray Abraham for Amadeus that year.)

Your not able to separate the actor from the acting. Why not? We have to do for lots of things in our lives......
Appreciate the acting and not the actors wacko beliefs.
