I have been trying to figure out why people like him so much. I accept that women think he's good looking and that's why some of them like him no matter what kind of actor he is. My friends seem to get offended when I don't agree that he's a wonderful actor... maybe I just haven't seen him at his best. I thought The Ninth Gate was horrible, and I didn't think he did anything to make it any better. I didn't think he was anything special in What Eating Gilbert Grape, although I did like the movie. I didn't think his performance in Chocolat was memorable. I liked Edward Scissorhands, but I don't think he brought anything to the movie that someone else couldn't have.

Can someone recommend one of his movies where I could see him at his best so maybe I understand what the big deal is about?

I thought him fitting for his role in Pirates of the Caribbean...

Really? Maybe I just don't like the movies he's in then. I thought that movie was a bit rediculous.

A gay, drunk pirate? Yup, fit the role pretty well.

From Hell
Donnie Brasco
Pirates of the Carribean

While he is not the best actor out there and these are not the best movies ever, IMO he was very good in all of these.

It was OK. El Club Dumas was so much better though!

Personally, I like Depp, he takes interesting roles and rarely does a "typical" movie.

Did you just get out of your time machine? Chocolat was 2000. Five years have passed and he's been in 16 movies since. Check out "Once Upon A Time in Mexico," "Pirates of the Carribean," "Finding Neverland" ...

I think he's worth the hype. Some movies of his worth checking out (I haven't seen Charlie and the Chocolate Factory yet):

Ed Wood
Pirates of the Carribbean
Donnie Brasco
Blow
Finding Neverland

i do think he is a pretty talented actor : in that he fits his roles very nicely. Granted it may be typecast, but considering the variety he's played, there must be -some- talent there ;)

This is exactly what I mean. Offended that I don't like Johnny Depp and feels the need to try to insult me because I haven't watched all 16 of Johnny Depp's movies since Chocolat.

*EDIT* Thanks to the rest of you who made suggestions without the attitude.

He was also good in Platoon, alhough he didn't play a lead role and didn't have much screen time.

Yeah, Platoon is one of my favorites, and when I saw him in the credits I was like "what? who? where?" lol

He managed to make an olden-times movie about the making of Peter Pan into an entertaining movie. I think he deserves some credit for that.

Oh, come on Jeff. You are not looking for anyone to make suggestions. You are looking for other people who judged him on films they saw 5 years ago and none that they have seen recently. My post was chalk full of facts, ie 16 movies you could see him in as well as 3 specific suggestions.

Why don't you change your subject to "Does anyone else hate Johnny Depp as much as I"?
