I also didn't watch much late night tv when I was younger so I don't recall much of the Tonight Show during the Carson decades but I understand how important he was to the entertainment industry.

I'm amazed how he kept his life out of the public eye after his retirement. You rarely (as least I rarely) saw any pictures of him or any video footage.

Yes, he smoked, but he did quit over a decade ago (if not much more)

I'd really like to know how long he smoked. I'm surprised. I never pictured him as a smoker.

They all used to smoke on camera during the Tonight Show untill the 80's...

So I wonder when he quit. 😕

This scares me. I smoked for over 15 years and quit a few years ago. I hope I quit soon enough that I wont have this same problem. :Q

I'm surprised you don't remember when he would smoke on camera right on the show. He probably smoked all of his adult life until a few years back. Not that I think it matters though. 79 is not a short life. Many a non-smoker dies sooner from natural causes.

Back then I lived with a mother who smoked, so seeing people smoke wouldn't have stood out like it would now. Plus, we didn't watch the Tonight Show all that much when I was a kid. My Dad had a long commute so all TVs were off at 10 or 11PM.

Yes, so it's pretty obvious that I turned this whole thread into a flamefest. Tell me how I crapped in this thread. Is saying RIP a derogatory remark now? Am I insulting Johnny Carson by saying "sorry if I didn't watch TV and don't know who you are, but rest in peace?"

Honestly, my only intention replying to this thread was to say rest in peace. Other people are the ones that need to control what they post, not me.
