In responding to an earlier post I did some research on the web (google rocks) and came across this page which ought to be seen by everyone debating the differences between the two candidates attitudes towards Vietnam.

For John Kerry there is the quote:

"I hereby request duty in Vietnam. My billet preference is "Swift" boats with a second choice of Patrol Officer in a PHR squadron."

He explicitly and directly asks to be placed in harm's way - he volunteers - and is not, in fact, placed there against his wishes.

The record on W is a little less clear as it only amounts to a check box.

It says "I do / do not volunteer for overseas" where the "do not" box is checked.

The page is available at http://www.awolbush.com/kerry-vs-bush.asp

I admit that this is probably partisan (being awolbush.com) however it is worthwhile to look at the actual documents with your own eyes before making a decision. I think that any reasonable person would see that Kerry clearly volunteered but no inference can be made, either way, for whether W did or not. The documentation on W is simply not extensive enough to make any such determination.
