Seems like a good thing to me. I think this is the right time and its the right place for him.

Thoughts?

*I do understand his appointment from Trump is to take some of the Russian heat off

I'm mystified. But all appearances Huntsman is not only very competent as a diplomat but is also sane. What's the catch? Is he to be just a beard?

Very good pick, but I wonder why Huntsman would agree to get in the middle of a Trump-Putin lovefest already in progress.

I had to Google the name to make sure it was the same Huntsman that ran in 2012, saw his photo, thought "Nope, different guy", then looked up the 2012 election and realized I just have a bad memory with faces. I vaguely remember feeling about him then the way I feel about someone like Rubio now, but looking over his Wikipedia page I didn't know he actually had a temporary falling-out with the Repubs and didn't follow the creationist and anti-global warming bandwagons. Seems like a rare good PR move on Trump's part.

Ultimately, yes it's "Trump's pick". But I really don't think the mental gymnastics that led to Huntsman being the most desirable choice can actually be credited to Trump. Based on most of the other appointments Trump has made, it doesn't seem like he bases his decisions on sound logical thinking. ;)

Huntsman seems smart, rational and sane, but unlike with China he has no experience or knowledge of Russia. I don't know why you would pick him for Russia, of all places.

Let's just be excited Trump made a pick with a history of competence and professionalism, esp with regards to Russia. We could have easily seen another unqualified sycophant fill this critical post.

In fact, had not the Russia thing but come under such a spotlight, that's maybe what we would have got.

I do feel encouraged that Huntsman was the Chinese ambassador, so he is experienced in dealing with a large and adversarial foreign power.

What comes to mind is that Trump's staff may be thinking that bringing Huntsman, along with his experience and his solid reputation as a diplomat into a situation that has all the makings and potential of a presidency destroying scenario can somehow work his magic into this fiasco and pull back Trump's presidency from the precipice that it's now teetering on. He would also bring an aura of legitimacy to the relationship between Russia and America, albeit a rather thinly veiled one given what's already been exposed and what will eventually get exposed irt Trump's business dealings with Putin.

On Huntsman's part, he gets to stay in the game and provide the valuable service to the American Diplomatic Corps that he's known for. It's a win for America in this sense, but sadly for all the wrong reasons.

Why the fuck didn't this guy run in 2016?? It was Trump or Cruz! CRUZ.

Huntsman did run in 2016, very briefly. He was always at or very near the bottom of the pack. Not the sort of guy GOP primary voters wanted, they wanted a Trump type. Now we are stuck with a "burn down the country to spite the other political party" President.

If only we had Huntsman or Kaisch as President now, the continuation of the USA would be a lot more assured.
