Certainly modern DNA testing could with a good deal of certainty prove or disprove the claim, but it sure sounds like a political hatchet job to me.

But the question is and remains, can the Edwards campaign disprove the rumors?

Looks to me like someone has some internal polling that has Edwards winning Iowa - hence the need for a 3-weeks-before-the-caucus smear.

But this sure still sounds like John Edwards has been swiftboated. Ironically, it could even benefit Edwards if he can prove its a planted story.

The only difference between this and a Martian baby one is the subject matter.

Why should he when Newt Gingrich did much the same and he has not slink off away in shame. Shall we add other democrats and republicans to the list. Its all too easy to compile a very long list and be bipartisan also.

But cheer up, I don't think John Edwards or Gov Sanfort could get elected for dog catcher right now.

In fairness - and I am a Democrat - what Newt Gingrich did was not "much the same" as what Edwards did.

Gingrich confronted his first wife to talk about the terms of their divorce while she was in the hospital recovering from cancer surgery (she did ultimately recover, and is still alive as far as I know). He was having an affair at the time (though his girlfriend was not pregnant). He married her six months after the divorce was final. Was this callous? Most definitely.

Edwards, on the other hand, not only fathered a love child while his wife was ill with what would prove to be terminal cancer (perhaps caused, at least in part, by the fertility drugs she took so they could have more kids while she was 50+ years old), he talked his young protege, who had a wife and kids of his own, into taking the blame for fathering the child, and asked him to fake a paternity test so Edwards could be cleared of having fathered the kid. He then took vast amounts of private donations to fund ferrying his baby mama and his stooge from 5-star hotel to 5-star hotel to keep the press off the scent. While his wife was terminally ill. While he was running for President.

As far as I'm concerned Edwards is a total sociopath, and I thank God for the National Enquirer, because without them he might have been Attorney General or even Vice President by the time the whole story broke. He was willing to destroy not only his family, but his party and the Presidency, in the interest of his own hunger for power. I think he's completely despicable.

The evolution of this thread has been rather amusing to read. It's funny to hear others mention how their douche-o-meters spiked whenever Edwards showed up, because I always felt the same thing. There's just always been something intrinsically unsettling about him. I've picked up on it since day one and so has my wife.

you know how the media is always trying to get republicans to nominate their biggest losers (mccain, palin, huckaby etc...) in order to help the democrats? maybe we should do that with john edwards. i think the democrats only chance of keeping the white house in 2012 would be to replace obama with edwards since he is a middle of the road white southerner that would appeal to moderate republicans

I'm not sure why, but I consider Edwards to be more liberal than Obama.
