LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- Emmy nominee Joe Mantegna is set to join the cast of CBS' drama "Criminal Minds," replacing Mandy Patinkin.

Joe Mantegna is joining the cast of "Criminal Minds."

The hire caps weeks of exhaustive searching for a new lead on the two-year-old crime drama after star Patinkin abruptly left last month because of "creative differences." Among those in talks for the role was Harvey Keitel, as the Hollywood Reporter reported last week.

"We are very excited to tell you all that Joe Mantegna is officially joining the cast of 'Criminal Minds,' " the show's executive producer/showrunner, Ed Bernero, wrote in a posting on the "Minds" fan blog during the weekend. "Thanks for hanging with us, everyone."

Details about Mantegna's character as well as when he will be introduced have yet to be determined. Patinkin's character, Jason Gideon, was the leader of the FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit at the center of the show.

Mantegna is nominated for an Emmy for his role on USA Network's miniseries "The Starter Wife." He has strong ties with CBS. He co-starred on two CBS series, "Joan of Arcadia" and "First Monday," as well as on the network's miniseries "The Last Don," which earned him an Emmy nomination

I knew Patinkin was leaving because they didn't want to cough up any more cash, but click the link I provided and look at a picture of this guy...he looks like something out of Total Recall...who the hell wants to look at that for 42 minutes straight? ugh.

Never watched the show, but I'm a fan of Mandy Patinkin. Sucks that Dead Like Me only lasted two seasons.

"My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."

Joe Mantegna is great. I dunno about others, but I wouldn't exactly call mandy patinkin a handsome guy, except maybe when he was sam francisco in alien nation.

damnit, i'm not that far in criminal minds yet.

it's happening this summer during filming. Patinkin abruptly left.

He was on Chicago Hope years ago and quit the show. Strange... Good show, hope it doesn't change directions.

I like Mandy Patinkin. Although almost all shows with him are doomed :)

It's not that he left the show when filming started. He never showed up for filming. Initial reports were that they had written him out of the first episode but he would be back for the second. Guess that won't happen either. :)

And he wasn't the leader of the team, the guy from Darhma-Greg is. He was the psychologist of the group and kept his main office of campus.

He was good in this as well as Chicago Hope so it does suck to see him go.

My wife loves this show, I think it's meh. She'll be devastated about this though.

My favorite Patinkin moment was when he was on Letterman about 15 years ago. He is a broadway actor by nature and a very good singer, so Dave asked him to do a number. He ended up singing a song that must have been 10-12 minutes long. The look on Dave's face was priceless, I thought he was going to go take the mic from Mandy and cut to commercial himself.

he wasn't the leader but he was the main character really, he had the most screen time, and most episodes turned on something he did. I had a dream last night that Dr. Reed took over...man that was a weird dream.

Anyway, apparently he did the same thing with Chicago Hope. The cast of that show wasn't very happy with him, and neither is the cast of CM, I saw a couple interviews where they said they felt like he hung them all out to dry

I liked his character, and also the family dynamic with the actual head of the group, and I liked Elle Greenaway too...before she murdered that guy and left.

What's with all this dissing of Mantegna? He's a fine actor and Fat Tony to boot! His work with Mamet has been quite memorable, check out House of Games.

Harvey Keitel would have been great but Mantegna has always annoyed me.

PS: Were they required to hire another jewish actor?

Yeah he's not that bad. I thought of that after I posted, but there's just something about him that annoys me. I hope he doesn't get his slime on AJ Cook.

I liked Mantegna when he did some of the "Spencer For Hire" movies for A&E sometime back. Aathough I liked his character, Mandy leaving is not a deal breaker.....still a fan.
