I graduated this spring with a Master's degree in European history but have yet to find an attractive job. I've applied everywhere for a teaching job (in southern Louisiana) but most of the positions are simply filled by coaches. I guess my Master's is more of a negative factor than a positive because it forces either diocesan or public schools into hiring me at a higher cost.

Anyway, I've applied everywhere from the Wal-Mart distribution center to a local newspaper and have either run into dead-ends or I am waiting on a response. I really, really need a job right now and I would prefer to find one quickly that is somewhat related to my education and experience; so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Another problem is that I know of two positions opening at an outstanding school at the start of the next fall semester, and this job would be ideal. Should I find any short term job until then, or should I be pursuing a substantial job now?

Basically,
- I have an MA in History
- I need a job
- I can't find a teaching job
- I need some suggestions for an alternate job
 
what oh what did you plan on doing with a masters in european history?


try magazines, or television channels or something.

edit: please tell me you minored in something or have some kind of vocational training in some field...
 
I'd prefer not to relocate if at all possible because my wife has a kickass job with many, many benefits.
 
What kind of job (aside from teaching) did you have in mind when you were getting your degree?
 
Well I planned on teaching for one...

I was also an All-American swimmer in college and I have coaching experience, so that was another prospect.
 
Walmart is always looking for stockboys and isle sweepers.

To be honest, you need to just keep applying in school systems and see if you can get in....or go back to school for your phd and go the university route. Other than that, see if you can get a business job of some type. Just apply for whatever floats your boat and see if you can get in. Around here, most people that got out of school ended up working somewhere downtown and they almost never had a degree in the area that they're working in, except for technical staff.

I'm 24 so I pretty much went straight through school with the only jobs being those that I could work into my schedule or teaching jobs.
 
i suggest finding any job with the benefits of free/assistance in higher education and then get another degree. do you really like history? don't you need to take some college courses to become a teacher (here in NY you need to)
 
You didn't student teach or anything? People I know that chose teaching did that and made sure they had a job lined up!
 
Did you give this problem any previous thought prior to spending 6 years studying in this field?

My gf is in the same situation, frustrates me to no end... Keep asking me what job she should get... you didn't think about it when you spend 4 years getting your degree?

If you are willing to teach HS or MS, Houston has a big need right now because of N.O. Otherwise, good luck to you.
