Looking for a job back in the 80's must have been a really really daunting task. Take this for example. My school's career center has all its jobs online. If I am interested in a job, I select it for preselection. My resume automatically goes to the recruiter, where he/she can reject or accept it. If it is accepted, I am notified by email, and I can setup an interview time online.
Before the internet, when everything was done by paper, you probably had to visit the career center regularly, grab the huge folder which contains jobs, and carry enough resumes with you to submit them. After that, the resumes took 5-7 days to get to the recruiter and even more time for them to response. Even simple communication like setting up an inteview time or cancelling an interview probably took a lot of effort.
I am sure Monster.com and what not really suck, but imagine the alternative. Looking at the classifieds every weekend and sending a resume by fax or snail mail. If you had to research the company, you had to go to a library, and look at outdated information. You didn't have many forums or such things where you could ask for advice about the company or look up sample interview questions.
I love the internet.
