I know it's in jest but that's what my Mom did when I was growing up. It really depends on the community you're in. There are some legal issues one would want to be aware of. Ultimately the children's health and safety is your responsibility and if you don't want to get your ass sued off there's a lot of CYA involved in child care. Probably to much hassle for most people.
Paper route has been suggested before in threads of this nature (one I started myself too....)....

vi_edit is doing a paper route and gets an extra $800 a month for his trouble... I promised him I was going to look in to it but have been to busy...
It seemed like a pretty sweet deal though...
