I'm currently going through a recruitment process and they've asked for references.

I have references prepared from my previous employer (not current), but they indicated that they're unwilling to accept those because its been too long since I've worked there (~4 years).

My current employer has the policy of only verifying my position and employment dates, and outside of these two sources, I really don't have anyone that can act as a reference in the manner that they're looking for.

Is there anything I can do? I would like to use references from my previous employer as the duties and the responsibilities of the two positions are very similar, but they're somewhat adamant about it being 'recent'

Why can't your current boss or company owner give you a reference?

Those "only give hire/fire dates" are more for HR than your boss or the owner of the company.

I did speak with my boss. He's willing to give me a reference, but he's probably bound by the HR policy. He said he'll look into it to see if it applies, but i'm not holding my breath.

Is there anyone who isn't your boss at your current company who can act as a reference? i.e. someone who isn't your direct supervisor/manager, but can vouch for your performance?
