I'm graduating real soon and have been looking for engineering jobs. I posted my resume on Monster.com and have had several recruiters contact me. I've never dealt with recruiters before so I'm looking for more info and how the whole process works.

I've had several say they are advocating for me to maximize my base pay, which was a surprise to me. At first I would think they would be rewarded by the hiring company to find a good bargain, but it does make sense that the company would be willing to pay for talent. So do they get a commission based on my base salary?

Does a hiring company typically have competing recruiters recruit for one position?

Any tips for me to effectively work with recruiters to get a good position?

they get commision based on what the commision is. Several companies do it different ways. That said, most companies I have dealt with were a waste of time.

You can have multiple recruiters trying to get candidates in for hte same position at the same company.
Recruiters want to get maximum salary for you because they get paid a commission based on the percentage of your salary provided you are at the position long enough (forget the specifics).

My wife and I have both used recruiters in the past to land positions. For my field it is very specialized, so without a recruiter it would be very difficult to land a new job.

Good luck. Use them. They want you to get a job because that is how they get paid.

Recruiters are on your side. It's in their interest to do anything for you to sell you over so they can get you hired then they make $$.

I had a desperate recruiter who emailed me AND called me within seconds. It was hilarious.

if a recruiter asks you to come to their office and shut the door, sit down, relax, and let the good times roll, just go with it. They will hook you up with a good paying engineering job when all is said and done. Im serious.

Also, recruiters are not paid more to find entry level people, they get paid a percentage of what the company decides to pay you. The higher your base salary or hourly wage, the more the recruiter gets. It is in their best interest to help you get a better paying job.

As mentioned they get a cut of your salary which means it's in their interest to get you paid more. Some are a flat fee, but most are percentage.

Recruiters can be your best asset in the job market so find one or two and develop a relationship with them. Give them leads on positions and others in your professional network. Recruiters are invaluable because they have their finger on the pulse of a lot of companies and know what's going on with them. There are some sleazy ones out there but you can usually tell, if one is really pushy avoid them. You're looking for an advocate, not a pimp.

i dont know if they work for your absolute best interest - kinda like real estate agents

if they get you hired 50k , they get commission. if they get you hired at 55k, they only get marginally more on commission. so its much easier just to get you a job, then fight for a higher paying job, for not much rewards (on their end)
