Job question

About 2 months ago, I started working for a major local company, which I'll call company A. Shortly afterwards, a relatively new company (Company B) came into the market, outbid company A on some business and stole away ~10% of company A's total business. At the time, company A fired some staff, who no longer had a position, and other staff of Company A quit, and went to work with Company B. One of the former employees of Company A mentioned to me that there may be a job for me at Company B.

Today, I was contacted by the hiring manager, who all but informed me that I would be getting a job offer tomorrow. He based this off of my resume/work samples that my former employees had given him, as well as their recommendations.

Which job would you choose?

Pros for company A:
I Like the people. The work is ok, but at least for now, not what I want to do long term. I would consider myself to be somewhat underpaid right now, but my manager seems to agree. Due to the size of this company, raises and such need to come from the head offices at a scheduled time (~3 months from now.) The company has a big name that will look good on a resume. The company needs me.

Cons for company A:
Relatively dissinterested managers. May be limited opportunities for growth.

Pros for company B:
A 20% pay raise to start, with potential for up to another 30% depending on job performance after 90 days. Trip to Puerto Rico in a couple weeks. Work that is closer to what I want to do for a living. Potential for more growth since it is a new, rapidly growing company. The company wants me.

Cons for company B:
I would have to quit job A with no notice and leave them in the lurch. I'd be burning some bridges and pissing some people off. They are a privately owned company (~500 mil in sales) which some people believe are pushing too far too fast. I know some local companies won't do business with them, because they believe that the company won't be around long enough to fulfull contracts.

Finally, there is the possibility that company B is only offering me the job to screw company A. I'm don't think this is very likley, they aren't going out of business if I quit, but there is definitely some animosity between the companies and there could be some personal motives.

What would you do?

B won't let you give 2 week notice to A?

The hiring manager said that I could offer if I wanted to, but he also said that it's unlikely that Company A would accept. Company B has been taking people from Company A in other markets and apparently the usual response is.

"Ok, shut off your computer and leave immediately."

I'm not sure if we was genuine in making that offer though. He implied that I would need to start with the new company on Monday or Tuesday.

Apparently you become a major security risk after you've been tainted by the new company.

Take the Company B offer, ask for their okay to give two weeks notice but let them know Company A may tell you to take a hike.

Hard to say without knowing what you do or what the companies are, but this is my take.

Company B may be offering more money and nice perks real quick, but if things start to go downhill they may can everybody real quick and take their money and run.

If company A has been around for a while then there is a good chance of job security by staying there. Since you have only been there for 2 months, I honestly don't think anyone will give a crap if you quit but you not be welcome back if things don't work out right.

If you have a backup plan then go with Company B, if you have no backup then stick with A

So I got the offer today. It's what I expected. 20% jump in pay, with potential for more in the near future, annual bonuses comparable benefits. Apparently their second choice for the position is a candidate with ~6+ years of experience. I've got less than 1 myself. They've seen my work and apparently believe I can do the job, so I guess I'm flattered, but also a little weirded out.

Company A has been around for quite a while, ~100 yrs? But the specific division that I'm working for is likely to be bought by company be in as little as 2 years. As I saw when I first started, If my division gets sold, most likely I'm gone.

Company B has only been around for ~5 years, but they've been kicking butt where ever they go. They started with 4 mil in sales and now 5 yrs later they're pushing 500 mil in sales.

I guess right now I don't really have a back up plan if any thing goes awry, but I'm looking at dropping the bomb tomorrow morning.

Job uncertainty and you don't much like it, seems the clear choice is Company B. Even if they don't last(which would be odd), at least you are moving into what you want to do. Your resume won't take a hit and in fact might look better for future employers seeing your want to move up.

Well, I did it. I called up one of my future co-workers from Company A and accepted the offer. I go in to Company B tomorrow morning and drop the bomb. I'll offer to stick around through the day if they want me to (unlikely I think) and then start Company B first thing on Monday.
